You should never use your debit card anymore these days other than to get cash out of an ATM. Too much risk in having someone hack your card.
agreed. i've even gone so far as to have my debit card unlinked from my savings account and joint checking account. the debit card only goes to my personal checking, and i never have a large balance. only 1-2k for emergency cash.

Everything but my house note. Pay it off every month.
I haven’t paid for a flight in 10 yrs. Works well for us.

I'm thinking about using my credit card for everything and just paying it off at the end of every month to take advantage of getting cash back.
This is exactly what I've done for more years than I can remember and it works great! As mentioned, you just have to be disciplined enough not to get yourself in a bind.
I see Mint has been suggested, I've used it before but personally not a fan. I use YNAB and couldn't be happier. It's basically zero-based budgeting (envelope budgeting) but the way YNAB treats Credit cards is tailor-made for what you want to do. Upon every purchase it moves money from the appropriate category to your Credit card, assuring that money will be available when the CC bill arrives at the end of the month.
It's a subscription service, but the money you will save using the App will far exceed the cost of it. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a clearer picture of exactly where their money is going.

We pay for everything with a credit card except water bill, electric bill. That's only because they charge to pay with a credit card.

what expenses do y'all put on your credit card per month?
Every single expense we have except the mortgage & water bill goes on credit card & paid off at the end of the month.

Everything that doesn't incur a charge beyond what my cashback bonus is.

You're missing out on a ton of cash back. I get anywhere from $30-$60/month depending on what the rotating bonus % category is. I put everything on my CC except mortgage, electric and water billl only because I can't.
Not to mention you control your bank account and when you want $$ to come out. I like the fact that I generally only move money from there maybe 3-4 times a month and am a little more liquid in between just in case of emergencies.

I put everything that gives me the option or doesn't charge me an extra fee on my credit cards.

Literally everything except cash only and very small purchases. If I get a haircut, I'm giving my barber cash. If I buy a Coke, I'm handing cash over. If I get a Coke and some beef jerky, though, that's going to get put on the credit card.
I get 2% of all purchases deposited into a brokerage account, so charging as much as I can to the card and paying off every month is my game there.
I put the down payment on my last vehicle on my credit card to get the 2% back.

I put everything on my card except car note and rent.
Pay it off every Thursday and Sunday night before going to bed.

Everything. I get about $2500/yr cash back. Never paid a dollar in interest.
What card and plan do you have? Also, how much are you averaging on it monthly?

quote:CapitalOne Venture. It’s 2% back of all purchases regardless of category, but it will only pay the 2% as a reimbursement of travel expenses, which is the only way I redeem points. If you want a true cash back, it’s only 1%. There’s also a $99/yr fee. There’s probably slightly better deals out there, but I haven’t looked.

I average about $10k/month on the card. My mortgage and wife’s car note are the only things not on it, and some small random things throughout the month. Unlike a previous poster, if I buy a coke for a dollar, it’s going on the card.

What card are you using? We don't get near that unless we want to use it for travel. Which we typically do.
Posted on 5/26/18 at 9:04 am to BACONisMEATcandy
Yeah I should’ve said it is for travel - but I spend at least that in mandatory unreimbursed travel so it’s the same as cash back to me.

ok thats about the same for us then. I just view that as getting my $450 back for the CSR
