i used to think $1 million would do it, but not any longer

any numbers from the older/wealthier guys on here? it seems like it would be such a freeing feeling to have enough to just say and do whatever you wanted without fear of being "canceled" by society

Going to depend on the person, and there will be levels to it. Is this just F U to the boss? Or to society? Bare minimum, 33x yearly expenses, whatever that number is.

For me? It’s pretty low. I owe under 75k total including house. Enough money to generate 50k a year is “f you” money at this point.

5M is prob where it starts I'd say. Living off interest alone would be a very, very nice life.

Sounds pretty solid: 25x expenses is FI, 33x is FU

Dang, man! How much do you make? It wouldn't take anywhere close to that number for me to go out Scarface style...

Scarface quits his job

Depends on how old you are and how much you want to spend when you retire.

FI is FU.

Now a person may not want to say FU at FI, but they could.

25x annual spending when taking taxes, inflation and healthcare into account is FU money.

I think we're on the same page, haha. 33x is a point when you're a bit more emboldened to say what you could ("FU") at 25x

$5 million is the number. You could draw out 4% per year, which is $200,000 and you would still die with a sizable estate to leave your heirs.

for me, "F U Money" is what will generate $500,000 in safe returns (dividends, bond payments, etc) a year. So, I'm thinking $10,000,000?

Probably around $500,000-$1,000,000 of discretionary spending money per year over all other current costs of your normal lifestyle.

Some of y’all have crazy high amounts.

If I can quit my job today and never need to go back and continue to live the lifestyle I'm comfortable with, that's FU money.
