I know most here are rightfully diehard indexers, but what is your opinion on this managed vanguard fund. Seems to have a long history of providing great returns and at the admiral share level not a horrible ER. I peruse the vanguard fund list from time to time and always tempted to move some money from an index funds into it.

Don’t. Stay indexed low cost broad market you are not smarter than the market itself.

Just signed up for a Vanguard Roth IRA today also to reduce my 2017 taxes. My 401k from work is in a Vanguard retirement fund. Was looking to put my Roth IRA into something different to mix it up.

The Roth won’t reduce your taxes, but it will grow tax free for retirement. A Traditional IRA reduces taxes today, and then you pay income tax later on the full amount during retirement.

His income may be low enough to qualify for savers credit.

Well a managed hedge fund would be "they are not smarter than the market"

I have some money in it. Not as much as I have in other funds. And you are correct in regards to its' returns.

I would not argue against it.

I too have money in it. It looked like a really solid fund to invest in so I did.

You're going to be disappointed this time next year.

They aren’t. Warren Buffet offered a million dollar bet against any fund beating an S&P index fund over a 10year average. Only one taker in the country, and he lost, The big fees on the hedge funds kill the long term returns,

Those fees are why you hear about filthy rich hedge fund managers. It ain’t their stock picking that makes them rich. It’s their pocket picking,

Ok, error on my part after reading into it further. I don't qualify for a traditional IRA. I have a work sponsored 401k and I don't meet the income restrictions of a traditional IRA.

I'll see how 2018 goes. Might consider maxing the 401K contributions even though theres no matching. My employer just automatically contribute @4%.

What makes you say that? b/c you're anticipating the market will be lower?
