United Airlines- Should I opt for 10,000 miles or $200 e-voucher?

On a recent round trip international flight, my entertainment system wasn't working. As compensation, United Airlines is offering me 10,000 miles (5,000 for each leg) or a $200 e-voucher (actually two $100 vouchers, one for each leg).

Which one should I pick? I'm leaning towards the e-vouchers, but I think there may be a lot of restrictions on how they can be used (no international flights, etc.).

So far my google searches have yielded inconsistent, murky information.

Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance.

(If it matters- I have about 28,000 United miles in my account.)

I think 10k miles is only worth like $100 so id take the $200 in vouchers.

Just make sure you use them within one year as I'm sure they expire after a year.

Personally, I would take the vouchers. It costs at minimum about 25,000 miles to get a free domestic ticket and that's if they have seats available, which you already have in your account. If you add 10k miles to that, you're still not close to getting another free ticket. With the voucher, at least you could use 25k of your miles for a free ticket and then put 200 towards another ticket (wife, friend....) vs using 25k miles and then have 13k left over for future travel.

You should ask them about restrictions?

I would have raged on customer service and got a partial refund or 25,000 miles

Customer Service at United is worth nothing. They can't make any decisions and typically unless you are a premium flyer with them, they won't do anything for you. They cater to the hardcore business traveler.

I was in their Global Services program which is the highest tier you can hit with them. It's an invite only program and they will bend over backwards for you. Their second tier is 1K which is what i'm in this year and the difference between the 2 and how customers are treated is a shame.

60,000 miles is RT to Europe in economy.

1/6 of the cost to Europe RT is approximately $200, hence the offer. Also, United miles can be reasonably redeemed at .02 cents per point. Again hence the valuation. (10,000 points X .02 = $200)

I say take the money UNLESS you are planning to redeem points in the future for business or first class, where you will easily get greater than 2 cents per point.

Eta: Just saw your 28,000 miles. Tjat is a personal preference if you want the miles to get closer to an international award redemption faster. That is a subjective thing. And remember, you don't have to fly on United with United miles

Heads up on United vouchers/coupons/etc....you can usually only use ONE per future flight...Dont expect to use both $100 vouchers when booking flight, only one.

Damn. This is very good to know. I was about to opt for the e-voucher, but now I might opt for the miles.

1K at United is essentially worthless, particularly if you live and fly in and out of one of their major hubs. Watch any flight boarding at a hub when they call 1k, half the people on the plane queue up in Group 1. I was 1K for many years and it was meaningless. United is the worst vendor I have dealt with my life for anything.
