I'm thinking of buying a Toyota 4 Runner. I'm sure about what I want.

My question is this: Would it be better to pay for the 4WD for a better resale later or are they a solid resale without 4wd?

I keep cars for about 100,000 miles. I've only owned 2 as an adult.

TIA for any advice.

If you’re not going to use it don’t get 4wd. It may be worth a little more in the end but it will also cost more upfront and over the life of the vehicle in gas and maintenance costs. And I don’t think it makes it that much more desireable in the end because not a whole lot of people buying 4 runners are looking for 4 runners to take them off-road and we don’t have snow and such.

I wouldn't get 4wd if you have no plans to use it, and you can't go wrong with a 4runner. I bought a new one in 2003 for $33K, sold it in 2016 for $15k to a guy I work with. He just crossed 200k miles.

Yes, I thought it would be a good car "investment" if you will. Appreciate the advice.

To each their own, but, I bought my wife a 4Runner and can’t stand it. The seats are skinny, it rides like a truck (and I drive a 1500 GMC Sierra), the control panel is bulky and the back seat doesn’t have a lot of room.

Again, to each their own.

If you don’t plan on using it don’t get it. That said I went with the intentions of getting a 2WD and they had a “demo” model 4WD and was cheaper than I could get them on a 2WD. So now I have that.

Also, the SR5 4WD has open differentials so somebody looking for a 4Runner when you sell it will be looking for a TRD if they plan on using it for serious off-roading.

ETA: I absolutely love it. Don’t regret going with a 4Runner at all.

I am selling my 2018 2WD model, if you are interested. email under my profile.

But IMO, I purchased 2WD as resale value was not much difference for what you pay 1st round ($2-3k difference on price for 4wd and resale is around $1500-$2500 more, so the gain did not make much sense to me)

Get the 4wd. Most people who buy them used what the 4wd. It will appeal to way more buyers in the future.

If you think you will take road trips driving through the mountains and/or in snow get the 4 WD.

My wife has a 4 Runner and loves it. She's 6'tall and I'm 6'2" plenty of room for us. I have a 4 WD Tundra love it also. Both have aprox. 80,000 miles with no problems.

Throw insurance in there as well. It's not a huge difference, but 4WD vehicles cost a little more to insure.

Maybe this is different in different markets, but well maintained 4WD 4Runners are VERY highly sought after in the used market in a lot of areas. They're harder to find than 2WD ones, so just by basic supply and demand you'll have a lot easier time selling a used 4WD one than a 2WD one, and probably net more for the 4WD.

But as you said, if you're not going to use the 4WD, there's not reason to get one.

4WD will have much higher demand when you sell.
