Tesla FSD and even Waymo with its limitations are both safer than human drivers. It’s really a human psychological hurdle along with bureaucracy and lobbyists that are hindering adoption

Impossible to scale. TESLA has already reached the inflection point. Each WAYMO costs over $150,000 a pop.
What can you tell me about Avride?

That’s really a shame as it was legit in downtown SF during JPM. No attitude that you are only wanting to go a few blocks “up the hill”, showed up in a timely manner, etc.

10 years late and a tiny amount of beta testers later, we have a penis map.

Yay.

isn't Uber working on self-driving cars also?

Seems like under their current system, it would make more sense to just buy a Tesla and put it to work on Uber's app.

This would make it where individuals could buy the Tesla's and use them on Uber, as they do now, but without a driver.

Years ago, when driver-less cars were still just a pipe-dream, the theory was that people would eventually enroll their cars in driver apps like Uber during the times they were not using them.

Tesla ordered by Florida jury to pay $329 million in fatal Autopilot crash

quote:

The trial concerned an April 25, 2019 incident where George McGee drove his 2019 Model S at about 62 mph (100 kph) through an intersection into the victims' parked Chevrolet Tahoe as they were standing beside it on a shoulder.
McGee had reached down to pick up a cellphone he dropped on his car's floorboard and allegedly received no alerts as he ran a stop sign and stop light before hitting the victims' SUV.
"We have a driver who was acting less than perfectly, and yet the jury still found Tesla contributed to the crash," said Philip Koopman, a Carnegie Mellon University engineering professor and expert in autonomous technology. "The only way the jury could have possibly ruled against Tesla was by finding a defect with the Autopilot software. That's a big deal."

I mean, the driver presses the accelerator. Do we really want the car to override the human actions?

I posted the text with the article to provide context that human error contributed to the crash. I'm pretty neutral on AVs overall and I think they work well in certain environments and not so well in others.

Isn't this what it will take to fulfill the promise of AVs on safety and efficiency? Need to drive 2 mph over the speed limit or run that yellow turning red, should AVs allow that to happen? Just asking....

But we don’t even do that with everyday cars. We could easily put governors on cars to restrict their speed to legal limits and even get more specific to limit the speed to the limits posted using GIS data. So this is no longer a Tesla or self drive question, just an every type of car question.

Has any manufacturer been sued for allowing their vehicle to drive beyond speed limits (eg >80mph)

Tesla self-driving is amazing. Have you been in one?
quote:

despite it being a decade behind.

You don't understand the difference between Tesla and Waymo systems.
You should, but you don't.
Your statement makes that clear.

Waymo uses LIDAR (an array of pulsed lasers). Tesla uses standard cameras and processed visual imaging, just like humans. Tesla's approach, while more complex on the processing end, is tens of thousands less expensive, and potentially licensable to any car with cameras, computing power and self-driving capacity.

Both systems still have issues. Neither is going to recognize a person beside the road frantically waving his arms and screaming "The Bridge Is Out!" They'll miss nuances like "No right turn on red" signs. Hence the taxi geofencing for both. But Elon's system is outstanding. At this stage, Waymo is like a T-Rex watching the asteroid approaching.

you are right you dont know.

Waymo uses LIDAR, radar, and cameras systems in their car.

6th Gen (Latest): Optimized to be more cost-effective, using 13 cameras, 4 LiDARs, and 6 radar unit

quote:

Today, Waymo and Hyundai Motor Company announced they have entered into a multi-year, strategic partnership. In the first phase of this partnership, the companies will integrate Waymo’s sixth-generation fully autonomous technology – the Waymo Driver – into Hyundai’s all-electric IONIQ 5 SUV

quote:

Toyota Motor Corporation (“Toyota”) and Waymo reached a preliminary agreement to explore a collaboration focused on accelerating the development and deployment of autonomous driving technologies

6th gen Waymo is now estimated to be around 70K per vehicle with their massive expansion in 2026. They expect to surpass 1 million rides a week

I have been getting waymos exclusively in downtown Austin when I pick Uber electric. So far no complaints. The closest adventure was when a cyclist jumped out of the bike lane and the waymo had to swerve to go around him. Luckily no car was in the left lane.

I think it has hit a few bikers over the years, but no major injuries.
