Tesla has started Robotaxi testing in Austin, Texas, without any vehicle occupants, the company’s CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Sunday. Two Tesla Model Y Robotaxi units were spotted in Austin traveling on public roads with nobody in the car.

The testing phase begins just a week after Musk confirmed that Tesla would be removing Safety Monitors from its vehicles “within the next three weeks.” Tesla has been working to initiate driverless rides by the end of the year since the Robotaxi fleet was launched back in June.

Two units were spotted, with the first being seen from the side and clearly showing no human beings inside the cabin of the Model Y Robotaxi:

Elon's going to be proved right again, isn't he? Going all in on vision when others had a more complex perception stack that included cameras + lidar + radar was thought of gamble at that time. That guy is truly something.

Yep, the guy does some incredible things, but he gets hate because he sometimes sees the future too early . It has always amazed me how much he is hated, even before he became political. Many humans just seem to hate new technology. Now, he is going to put data centers on satellites. That will be the new hate .

I cant wait for this technology to be allowed for regular passenger vehicles. complete game changer. Can you imagine being able to let your car go to work for you while you are not using it? Also, you can do things like send the car to pick up your parent and bring them to a doctor visit or bring your child to sports practice while you are at work. It will be revolutionary. Not to mention shutdown all of these foreign shitheads that are doing taxi and uber.

And it will put insurance companies out of business.

The latest version of FSD on the regular HW4 cars is incredible. If you’re not in bumper to bumper traffic, you don’t even have to pay attention to the road with it nagging you. It just lets you play on your phone or whatever.

So does anyone think this kills Uber or just puts a big dent in them?

i dont order food much, but im going to assume you dont need to tip the driver for autonomous deliveries?

heck, my Ford Blue Cruise will self drive in bumper to bumper. It’s nice. Put on a pod cast and zone out while my truck basically drives itself

Eta, not saying Blue Cruise is better than Tesla , just saying about the state of self driving tech

I think it does better in bumper to bumper traffic. Mine absolutely does not allow me to play on the phone. If I am doing anything on the phone it will disengage the FSD pretty quickly. 2026 Model Y.

Lol, you have to really understand what is going on. When Tesla is ready a light switch goes on and everyone with a Tesla will have the technology. You can go buy a 150k Lidar equipped Waymo if you want to, assuming they are still in business when you decide to purchase.

I understand the two approaches. Waymo having a multi layered system (cameras, Lidars & Radars) vs Tesla having a camera only approach. The bet is Tesla's model will be as safe as Waymo's. I don't know if that will be true (no one does right now) but my bet is it won't be.

Waymo's costs will come down as they move from the Jaguar and move some manufacturing in house. But Waymo also is working with multiple car manufacturers in Hyundai, Jaguar, Toyota and Zeekr.

The winner will ultimately be the people with impaired mobility and safer roads across the board. I just like Waymo's approach more

Waymo white paper says vision only is way to go. They are working on their version of it and will implement it later. LiDAR is not the final answer. They will figure it out no doubt, problem for them is scaling versus Tesla. 2500 cars right now and maybe 5k next year is small potatoes for Tesla. They can make that in a few days whenever they are ready to go. I’m betting Tesla is the clear winner here with wayno having a 20 percent ish market share
