In the next few weeks I will be purchasing a 2022 Kia Carnival for the wife and trading in her 2013 Nissan Murano with 30k miles. Dealership offered $9k for the car towards the new car purchase. Part of me feels this is the easy solution and tax offsets will basically negate selling it myself. I know used cars are pretty high commodities right now and this one has so little mileage that I could probably get a few w grand more. Existing car isn’t perfect and has minor wear and tear in the interior and a cracked front glass.

Update:
Looks like I have someone from GiveMeTheVin coming tomorrow to do a final check on the car and cut me a check.

If you think you can get a few grand more, why not reach out to the dealer and try to either negotiate a few grand more for the trade-in, or a few grand more off of the purchase price.

FYI, I prefer the hassle less approach of a trade-in; however, the 3 cars I have traded in were over 100k miles.

I’m basically in a no negotiation for the purchase price. Put my deposit down a month ago and there’s a long list behind me waiting to get this car.

Bring it to Carmax for shites and giggles. You're saving $900 on taxes by trading it in, I think carmax can do better and get you more than that $900

I just sold a vehicle yesterday. Had it listed in several places. The hassle of dealing with other people flaking out or wasting my time just talking wasn’t worth it (to me).
Carvana gave me a cash offer 1,500 more than Carmax and about 4k more than was offered trade in. The guy took like 4 pictures I signed some papers and they did an ACH into my checking account that cleared this morning. And they picked it up from my house.
Take 5 minutes and see what they offer.

KBB says $9-11k on a mid grade Murano with 30k miles. I'd definitely explore a couple of other avenues and see if you can get the dealership to come up a little bit.

ETA- Selling a $10K car at tax/stimi time is going to bring A LOT of folks out of the woodwork. Unless you sell it to someone you know (friend's kid, etc), I definitely wouldn't post it for complete strangers.

This is my position. Last car I sold was like 5 years ago. I was so damn tired of people coming to drive it and look at it, I ended up taking cash in an envelope for about 1k less than asking. Probably made about 200 bucks for about 20 hours. Then had met a group of non English speaking Arabs at the license plate deal to sign title over. Never again.

You'll get more by selling private party, but also deal with more hassle.

Givemethevin.com

"It's so easy you can do it in your underwear!"

They'll do the in and out with the dealer so you get the tax credit, plus they'll pay fairly for the trade. Read their FAQ and let us know how it goes.

Listen to their radio show on Saturday morning, they'll buy your car sight unseen but most people just upload to the website. They're paying big money for used cars, there is about to be some serious inflation & huge shortages of inventory in the car market, new and used.

Your local dealer will jam you on the trade because multiple manufacturers have stopped making new cars completely due to the chip shortages.

CarMax is great, got $2000 more than any dealer would give me on a 2007 F150, could not be easier.

In 2001 I took my 1987 4WD Toyota SR5 pickup with a 4 cylinder Turbo to Carmax. Practically everything was broken on it and it had probably 150K or more miles on it. I think Kelly Blue Book was like $1500. I was hoping to get $1000, but with so many things broken (AC, radio, side mirror, paint faded, cracks in the vinyl seats, transmission issues, and more) I would have taken almost any offer. I think the test driver must have been blind and not very bright. They didn't write up anything wrong and noted the truck was in excellent condition. I was pleasantly surprised when they offered me $2800.

Just my opinion. Since I commented earlier on it but I seriously wouldn’t go any other way than Carvana for buying or selling if they had what I was looking for. The vehicle I sold needed new tires bad and they didn’t say anything about it. Was actually nervous they were going to call me out on it.

Someone posted above that

Did you explore that with GMTVIN to see if you could get a sales tax credit on your new car purchase?

Also, if anyone understands how that works, please explain it in baby steps.
