Thinking of switching banks. I currently bank with Chase. What are some suggestions from the board on the best bank to open a checking account with. I am leaving Chase because I had fraudulent charges on my account and they failed to reimburse those charges. I live in Baton Rouge.

That's called stealing and it's 110% illegal. Highly doubt the charges were fraudulent.

I was in Nola. Lost my card and checked my account Sunday and there were all sorts of charges from Family Dollars, Wal-mart, Walgreens, etc. in places like Harahan, Gretna.

Did you file a police report? I mean it's your money, but I would've filed a police report and make sure I got my money back. Not leave it in the hands of Chase. I bank with Chase and the only time I had fradulanent charges I filed a police report and got my money back in 2 days.

Also, I'm just saying be careful. Whether you're telling the truth or not doesn't matter to me. But I had a friend in college who would go out and spend a few hundred $ and then the next morning call his bank and make fraud claims. Needless to say he got caught after a few times and spent 2 years in jail.

Yeah that's definitely not the case. However, no, I did not file a police report nor did I think it would have been necessary to file with the NOPD. In hindsight, I wish I would have.

USAA. They offer a free checking and savings account.

If you are military (or family of military), then their insurance, retirement and other services will open up for you.

I had someone use my debit card at an ATM and Schwab gave me the $200 back.

I've been with chase as well and am considering switching for different reasons. Do other banks typically charge you anything to open checking/savings accounts with them?

no, you are leaving Chase because of the process that they indicated for money reimbursement was too long.

I had my Debit Card stolen in Mexico. I called Whitney. Whitney told me all the numerous things I needed to complete (police report, personal statement, copy of each fraud charge, etc). I completed those items...boom money back in my account!

maybe a smaller bank will simply go with your word

This is a credit card or debit card?

Never had them not reimburse me.

Debit. I went through the process multiple times and spoke with multiple people and could never get an answer on why charges weren't reimbursed. This happened in February and it's now April. I have them my story and they said it's researched department would investigate the charges. It's just a pain dealing with someone over the phone and going through all the automated bs. I was thinking going with a more local bank that values its customers might be the move plus you have a better direct line of communication. I have been with a Chase for over 10 years.

I always love the transaction check when you lose a card. I stopped in BR Tigerland the night LSU baseball team was celebrating the 2009 championship there.

After the 3rd bar or so that I confirmed I had to say, "Now we know how I lost it."

Lost my card and had multiple charges on it from a bunch of different places. Called chase and told them what happened, had all the money back in my account in a couple of days. Was on the phone with them for less than 5 minutes

Was depositing cash one day in the ATM, the machine had a problem and shut down on me. I hadn't counted the money so didn't know how much it was. Called them and the woman asked me the amount and I told her I hadn't counted it so I wasn't sure. She told me to estimate how much I thought it was, so I guessed what I thought it was. The money was in my account two days later. Less than a five minute phone call

There's nothing wrong with chase

This is why I never use my debit card except to get cash at an official bank ATM.

If I lose a credit card at a store or get skimmed at the gas pump or by a crooked waitress, it won't be too horrible if the thief/hacker runs up bogus charges. I file a dispute of the charges and don't pay them.

If that happens with a debit card, my money is gone from my checking account until I (hopefully) persuade the bank to give it back. Meanwhile, my auto-drafts for utilities and any outstanding checks may be bouncing, which generates late fees, NSF charges, cutoff notices, etc. Don't need that headache.

I might try visiting a branch in person and talking to a manager. If that fails to resolve the dispute, file a complaint with the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). LINK

The agency serves the complaint on the bank, and they can fix the issue or file a response. Public stats (a wall of shame) are kept on unresolved complaints.

The CFPB opened in 2011 as "the nation's first federal agency specifically mandated to protect American consumers in the financial marketplace." Use it now before it gets shut down.
