I typically only keep money in low risk ETF's and have done poorly in single stock purchases. Trading is not my day job. On a suggestion, i purchased AMRN and it's up 230% as of today. My question is how to play this out? Do i hold until it dips and sell? Should I get more in anticipation of the company being bought out? I'll hang up and listen..

Hard to say without knowing the big picture. But, I generally take some profit after 100% gain. I'd sell half of it and follow closely.

AMRN

It's a biotech that seems like it's still developing drugs to one day become profitable or be bought out. The general advice with these things is to buy the rumor and sell the news.

Tough to really make a suggestions without knowing how big your stake relative to your portfolio and your personal finances.

Taking out a 230% gain never hurt anybody though. If you are close to making it a long term capital gain rather than a short term capital gain I would look at holding. Otherwise if it were me and I had not done a ton of research and had a price target in mind, I would take my profit and run.

This is what happened. After reading an article this morning the bump is based on positive test results for a new drug. The drug could lead to 2Bn in sales or being bought out by a larger pharma. Seemingly that would be positive for the stock price, but I'm unsure if it directly correlates.

Yes it would, but it also depends on where the drug's at in the FDA approval process. If it still has another hoop or two to jump through, I'd exit and consider jumping back in with profits on a dip later. If FDA approval is soon, I'd hold.

I'll add that the OP should already know the stock if he got into the position to start with.

Yup. The answer to the question is to execute the game plan you had prior to buying into the stock.

OP should probably sell now. While he figured out a game plan.

I was prepared going in to lose my investment or let it sit as long as i needed. The game plan was "$100 on black".

What I'm unsure of is the risk going forward. The news is positive test results for a drug currently on the market. I guess worst case scenario would be no increased sales after the news. That would seemingly lead to the same stock price before the news.

Again, I do not trade single stocks because I admittedly do not know what i'm doing. History has proven it.

I was prepared to get out, but I keep reading positive news stories about staying power.

Set a stop loss. If it starts to dip and hits your stop loss, you should still have a very significant return without having to watch it every day but if it goes up, you are still in.

Take a crypto lesson learn.. market cycle won’t let something stay up 200% for long. There will always be dips. Cash out with a tight stop loss and buy the dip if you truly believe in the project

You gonna tell us how much you threw at this thing?

You're up A LOT. I'd sell 75% of it.

$1K initial investment. Not life changing, but the best return I've seen to date. I got in at 3$, this morning it was $9, currently at $11.91.

Because this will do like TLRY and come crashing back to reality in a few days, I would pull all the money or all but $1k from it then buy back in when the drop happens. Or take the capital gains and invest in another project. Either way, I'd have a stop less set at $9-$10.
