Does anyone have any ideas?

Once they get established, they do real well. It's that first 3 years they have to get through first.

I know the ones that have been doing it 20+ years do really well but most say it's changed and they wouldn't get into it now

you do very well for yourself if you have your own agency. it sells itself.

My future FIL is an established agent, as is his father. They both do incredibly well for themselves. Almost to the point that I feel bad for only making engineer money to take care of his daughter.

If they were still giving agents the contracts they were 25 years ago then I would be all for it. The new agent' contracts are not nearly as lucrative as the old ones which is why you see people saying that older agents are making bank while younger ones are just doing alright.

Far too much. The agent doesn't do any work any more and this position should be disintermediated.

I have a neighbor who owns a State Farm agency. He brings in $500,000 per year on average. Not a bad gig if you can get one.

if the agent does nothing, then why are there millions of insurance agents?

Not sure if you missed it, but there is this new thing called the internet now.
You can get every kind of insurance imaginable and never deal with an agent.

I'd rather have someone I can call up with questions instead of a "contact us" email address or calling up some dude in India

Yep. When I use a service industry I want to get service. Not a recording, India or an FAQ on a web site. I'll even pay more for service.

Once you can get to that point, it is a pretty good lifestyle.
However, getting to that point is one of the most stressful things you will go through.
It is the world of insurance. Early years is most underpaid, overworked job you will have. Later years of your career it flip flops.

that's fine until you have to file a claim.

I worked for SF for 4 years in college.
Got out of that buisnessas as soon as I graduated. Like everybody has said, the old school agents are balling, the new ones not so much.
You have to make some serious sacrifices early on

Depends on the location....also don't hold your breath waiting on one

I wanna say Allstate is easier to get into. State Farm is rather difficult. If you're open to relocating, it makes it easier.

Woah, I agree. Just saying that being able to get 50 online insurance quotes in an hour makes pricing much more competitive...
