and for those of you that don't know its a STUPID expensive neighborhood in Houston. I don't live there...obviously. But what i did notice is that considering the price of all the houses there. Everyone had a pretty moderate vehicle, even several vehicles that were at least 10 years old. I think there is something to be learned here......
Yes i know warren buffet drives a Lincoln.

You went jogging in Houston, in June, at midday?
Edit: Never mind, I think I got it. The people in Lexuses were all at the office - those 10 year old beaters were the nanny's cars.

Well i saw the nanny cars, my first though
This was in the early evening and some off them were nice cars but were just old. My other thought was thats just their beater and they have a Ferrari parked away in the garage.

For a better example, drive by some of the plantations in Natchez, MS ... you'd be hard pressed to find a car newer than 1990 in a driveway.
I can think of nothing else in this world that loses half its value the second you use it, except maybe a condom or a toothbrush.

Is River Oaks more affluent than The Woodlands?

River Oaks is old money Houston, and certainly wealthier. The Woodlands is mostly new money.
The Woodlands is very upscale, but River Oaks is like Beverly Hills.

I live in the area and have noticed the same thing driving around but like you said it's probably the nanny's car, the nice cars are locked up in the back, at work, or shopping

Also, you probably won';t find many people in River Oaks with a mortgage on their house.

Millionaire Next Door - Amazon
Read the book, "The Millionaire Next Door". It's old, but still holds true to this day.

The "Millionare Next Door" was and interesting read, I had seen many of the things he talked about first hand. In the mid 70s I worked for a bank in a small town, during that period interest rates were respectable and most people did their investing and borrowing with local banks. I was amazed at how little money a lot of people that were assumed to be well off actually had. They had very good incomes, but it all went to service debt. I was equally amazed at some of the wealth that was held by some of the most average people.

y'all laugh at me when i tell you the rich people i know here buy fake rolexes...and they're proud of it.
i did some computer consulting for frank lorenzo back in 1991 right after he'd been forced out as ceo of continental at his house in river oaks.
i was young & stupid and it was funny to go over to his house and he'd just be sitting around in his robe and slippers..ala hugh hefner..i think he was really really depressed at the time.
good memories.
eta there he is. he even favors hugh a little

Woodlands is a City in itself with many neighborhoods, mostly upscale upper middle class and some very rich areas.
River Oaks is a single neighborhood in the middle of Houston proper housing some of the richest people in the world, not just Houston, not just the US. People like Dan Duncan live there (RIP) who have parties with the Bushes and Sultans from Saudi. Its another universe

worth nothing if not used, but I hear you.
bottom line: you don't live in your car, so who gives a shite?

Bush sr lived off memorial (I think it was memorial anyway) between chimney rock and voss as I recall when lived in Houston. Can't remember the name of the subdivision but it was pretty fancy (obviously).

I also don't live in my food, but you don't see me eating alpo for dinner.
The lesson is: Everything in moderation.

Lived in Houston in 80-81, I believe Debakey the heart surgeon was living in River Oaks at that time.

Here is a link for homes in River Oaks
Houston Association of Realtors
use 77019 as your search
Just think of the monthly nut to operate a house like this. The wife still shops everyday, but not at Target and the like but at Saks and Neimans.
