Sales Guys or Gals
Posted by BadatBourre

How did you get your start? I need a career change, last 12 years have been spent in a "support role" and it's getting old. I seem to spend more of my personal time "supporting" others and getting nothing in return. At least in sales you are awarded for the extra work by commissions.
Also, if anyone has any direct advice on the medical sales community, I'm also really leaning into that route if possible. Through my years, I've been able to develop relationships with a few orthopedics in the South LA region and that field in general has always interested me. Thanks for any advice you may have.

I started as a Field Engineer for a computer company and swithed over to a sales position after several years.
I knew the customers and they helped me succeed in my new endeavor.

I truly wish that I could switch over internally, I would enjoy that team as well as already knowing our company. Unfortunately, my company knows that my role is rather difficult to fill and won't allow that to happen.

What's your 12 years of experience in? I switched into tech sales in my 30's after a military / restaurant / operations run and it's been the best thing ever for my life.
I have the same problem you do in that I go insane having work piled on for a constant return, especially while others do less. Sales does tend to more directly reward your accomplishments.

I was on the operations side and was out burnt out looking at other jobs when I decided to give sales a try with the same company. Because I had knowledge of our products and business it was an easy transition. Financially it was the best move I could have made because I quadrupled my salary and cut my work hours by 15 hrs per week.

Well, if you leave them for greener pastures, they will have to replace you anyway.
Why not discuss your desires and intentions with them?

Safety. I've worked in a few different industries, but mainly safety related. From an instructor to an offshore technician, to now manager.

This is my main reason for wanting to switch. Losing to much of my personal time and getting nothing in return for it. It's just, "expected."

Is there sales in your industry? If so, your easiest path is networking in. Almost anywhere you go outside of your industry is going to ask you to land in an entry level role.
Entry level medical sales is a grind. It's incredibly hard to get in unless you're connected to someone with influence who can be your champion or coming out of a program that lines up those interviews. It's also incredibly competitive and tough to get started if you're outside of a major metro area.
Like I said, I work in tech sales and they expect most people outside the space to come in as a Business Development Representative which is usually around a 55k salary with 25-30k incentive on top of that (so like 75-80k on target earnings) and then it quickly goes up from there after about 18 months in that entry role and into the Account Executive space.

Get on linked In and Medreps.com and start contacting recruiters. Looks like you’re in South Louisiana? Try contacting Gwen Payne, she usually has a good handle on what’s going on in Louisiana and will probably have some good advice for you. LINK

In tech sales and management for over 30 years and trust me you won't work less, you will definitely have the opportunity to make a lot more money though. Turnover is very high and people switch jobs a lot. I don't know about medical sales but, the pressure is sometimes insane for us especially end of quarter, end of year in my field so if you thrive under those conditions, then it is worth it. It is easy to burn out though. The only thing I know about medical sales is like another poster said it's a "who you know" field and is a bit more difficult path to entry. I think the hours can be crazy but, totally depends on what type of medical sales you are doing. The people I know that make the big bucks are doing what you are interested in which is orthopedic device sales. Good luck in finding your new passion. I would consider going into sales in the industry you are currently in since you have knowledge of it already. Might be able to go in higher and not have to start at the development level

I'm at about 14 years with similar industry and now VP of Sales.
My current company I've been at for 8 years. I started as just regional sales rep. Company wasn't technically a startup as it was a sub of the parent company in England but had the feel of a startup.
My piece of advice if you make the switch , odds are you will be starting at similar role (regional rep - possibly 1-4 states). Bust your arse - hustle - grind.
Sales can be very lucrative but it takes effort and hard work especially if you are starting out. As mentioned, high turn over job. I have to hire and fire reps now. I can usually tell within a very short time the ones that will work out. They put in the effort.
OP -Do you have a family? Where are you located?
I can say when I was first at this company, I was on the road weekly. At the time it was just my wife and I. Once I had my daughter, I was fortunate to move up in the company and while I'm not on the road as much, I still travel a lot. You need to have a good family support structure.

I would add attend any vendor Tradeshows you can and maybe look t some of the smaller companies product sets.
You seem based on your post like you have a good sense of the market for medical
Smaller companies or more apt to take a chance on a greenfield sales rep as their base salaries are usually significant less but your upside/commission can be enormous
I have been in cyber security sales at inside sales level, account executive level and now VP level. It has blessed my family financially more than I every thought ….
All of the advice by other other posters is solid. Just keep networking and “make your own luck”
Best of luck!

Just the wife and I. Weekly travel is fine, it's the weekend travel that my wife hates, which is what I currently have to deal with. Unpaid, and no flex time. Very frustrating.
Located in Southeast Louisiana.

In the 12 years of being within the safety field, I've developed relationships with MOST of the orthopedic providers in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Thibodaux and Houma. I would prefer to stick towards Ortho just because of those relationships would be a great starting point for me.

Ortho guys in solo territories never get a day off, like ever. No drinking, on call every day and night. No vacations. Oh, you can try...but the minute they call and you arent avail to work them thru you get strike 1,2, and damn near 3. My experience is they will put you in timeout.
That is in a smaller area with one rep. If you are in a large metro area, ignore all I said.
