Re: Using AI to Enhance Investing Research | Discussion

Very interesting discussion in the thread here, and I’m keen to expand on it. This is an idea I’ve had for a while, so I wanted to ensure it’s executed on properly.
Link to post about discussing investing and retirement with ChatGPT
After reading the thread above, it’s pretty obvious we’re only scratching the surface of what’s possible.
I’ve been kicking around an idea for a while now to build a custom AI specifically for investing and personal finance—not just another generic ChatGPT wrapper, but something tailored to the kinds of questions and research we discuss on this board. I have experience in the custom AI creation field and many of my projects have been implemented directly into vital workflows at my employer’s request. (As specific as I can get on that)
The goal would be to build tools and workflows that actually solve problems Money Talk users have. Whether that’s portfolio analysis, retirement planning, ETF comparisons, options strategies, SEC filing summaries, market research, valuation models, tax planning, or something completely different.
Rather than guessing what people want, I’d rather build what this board would actually use.
So here’s the question:
If you could have an AI do anything related to investing, markets, or personal finance, what would you want it to do?
It doesn’t have to exist today. It doesn’t even have to seem possible.
What tasks waste the most time?
What questions do you ask repeatedly?
What analysis do you wish could be done in seconds?
What would make you a better investor?
Post any ideas—from simple calculators to crazy, ambitious features. I planned for this to originally be a passion project that evolves as AI improves, but I figured I’d extend the idea to you all so we can put our heads together to create something that we can all benefit from in the future. No work would be required of any of you other than to assist with idea generation.
I’m curious to see what this community comes up with.

It will be built, just about visualizing the runway for the project and adding some requested features to the ones I already have in mind

It’s the market data for me. How you integrate real time, accurate market data with AI agents would be a big opportunity.
And the data set needs to be broad for all kinds of investors and strategies.
The best way I’ve found to do this is via plug-ins & excel. I’m sure there is an even better way. Maybe I should ask my AI

Agreed and noted. Market data urgency is necessary. Could be intriguing to create it with a push notification system opt-in for notifications for market data related to specific sectors or companies.
Lots of ideas flowing at the moment

Depending on what kind of data you're talking about, you could have it scrape from investing.com.
Or if you want what is arguably overkill, pay $199 a month to give it access to a standard databento subscription.

Off the top of my head, one of the more tedious things I tried to do was to develop trailing stop loss targets for a portfolio of stocks incorporating volatility vs a straight % downturn. I didn’t know whether to use Beta or implied volatility from options. It was a PITA to set up, update and track.
Another would be to determine optimum position sizing to minimize risk and maximize returns. I’ve used some back testing tools and other things out there but it involved manual inputs with different stocks and funds to find the best sharpe or whatever ratios.
My biggest challenge at 55 is trying to balance total return, risk and what’s the sweet spot to get to retirement while not being overly exposed to a 2008 haircut. I could go 100% QQQ and be driving a Lambo at 60 or working till I’m 80 if everything tanks in 3 years. I don’t think running Monte Carlo scenarios for a bad, average or good return does this well and never gives advice as to allocation %.
Who knows how to set that up but assuming Claude could tell you and do it too.

I would like to see something that allowed me to screen and see stocks with scores for all these below in the same place:
industry strength (short-term, mid-term, long-term)
technical setups (stage 3 stocks showing strength after a pullback, breakout candle from a trading range, morning star pattern, different strategies)
fundamentals (vs. expected)
earnings release dates (to avoid buying the day before earnings, or if I'm feeling crazy buying the day before earnings
)
catalysts (insider buying/selling, fda decisions, sec filings, congress buying/selling)
social media buzz (sentiment on reddit, twitter, etc.)
It would be cool if you could enter in what kind of trade you are screening for as well:
swing trade
day trade
long term investment
etc.
Perhaps also having a risk tolerance setting which would control which stocks were screeneed (low float vs. high float, liquid vs. illiquid) stocks, historical volatility averages.

You may want to read Giuseppe Paleologo's Advanced Portfolio Management: A Quant's Guide for Fundamental Investors. I want to be clear that it is not a light read, but based on what you've said in your post, you may be able to handle it. It may not provide a definitive answer to each of your questions because the solutions may not be conclusive or simple, but it will expose you to some options and discuss them.
One example I'll mention is position sizing. Using mean variance for position sizing, aka constructing a Markowitz portfolio (modern portfolio theory), often leads to "highly unintuitive allocations" and/or underperformance. His recommendations include a proportional rule (more alpha = more allocation), a 1/N rule, or a mean variance with a 75% shrunken asset variance. Someone backtested the methods with crypto here if you are interested or want to read a bit more about them. 1/N is simple and does well enough if the other rules seem like too much work.
It's not a perfect book, but it certainly beats an LLM potentially telling you to invest using half Kelly even though that is often too aggressive and doesn't factor in max drawdown.

This is a great idea and would be awesome if you could pull it off.
I built something similar for myself using Claude, which is basically my own financial dashboard that gives me an overview of the market and has specific suggestions tailored to my brokerage accounts (Roth, 401k, etc.).
I never truly finished it as I just don't have the time but had a ton of ideas I wanted to incorporate.
One fun one that people on this board may like:
- A degen market buzz section that basically scours the big social media sites and highlights the most talked about stocks from places like X, reddit, Stocktwits, etc.

I think if you want to make a good "product" you need to focus it on a specific objective and make it really good at that thing.
I've seen some futures traders set them up for one specific ticker. Everything is tailored around this one thing. If you try to be REALLY good at trading oil, SPY options, TQQQ options, a specific sector, etc I think you can build something pretty cool.
For something more broad I think something like a portfolio optimizer might be useful. Tell me if I'm overexposed to something and don't realize it because I'm in these 3 different funds who all have ____ stocks in them. Tell me its a good time to reallocate from X to Y.
