Rising recession fears pushed U.S. stocks into a bear market on Friday with the S&P 500's decline from its all-time high in January now reaching 20%.

The S&P 500 dropped 2% on Friday, putting the benchmark for U.S. stocks 20.7% below its intraday record reached in January. The index is now headed for a close that’s more than 20% below its January record closing level as well.

So to most on Wall Street, this is now the first bear market to hit the markets since the rapid decline in March 2020 at the onset of the pandemic.

Where do we go now? Symbolic for the most part, but does this pushing the downturn quicker or does it slow and reverse with people thinking its bottom

Bears are always going to be proven correct. For 9 months to a year. Every 3 to 5 years or so.

God bless them. They must be so happy.

Of course, I'm fine with it. How else are you going to "buy low", if it is always up, up, up?

Frankly, another 20 to 25% give back would be very effective at shaking out all the weak hands. I hate it for folks who stayed in equities too long that it now affects their retirement window, but that was a conscious risk decision they made. Otherwise, I'm ready to start "buying low" in earnest.

Bears make money. Bulls make money. Hogs get slaughtered.

I don't know any bears. Saying a bear market is coming is not choosing a side.

Man, look around. They're the negatigers of the Money board (but IRL also).

Fair enough. "Declaring", noticing or "conceding" a bear market (which I freely do at this time) does not make one a bear.

Right. Hopefully it makes you look for value and invest into those values.

But it is time for the board to start talking about navigating where we are.

When the QE spigot was on I was still a bull.

Why it somehow makes you a negatiger to look at the shite sandwich of an economic situation we have after the incredible run up we had the last 5 years is very strange to me.

It’s just sticking your head out the window and noticing the giant funnel cloud headed at your house. Doesn’t mean you like tornadoes, but damn if it’s not about to storm out there.

But, you're not a bear by nature. Being realistic about current operating conditions isn't being a "negatiger".

Most bulls are at least somewhat realistic. Few bears are ever more than a bit optimistic (and only grudgingly). It is a subtle difference, but an important one.

Fed will still be raising rates over the next few meetings, so I think more to come.

Another 20-25% drop? That would be massive.

If the market drops to 40% from the highs, put every dollar you have in VTI.
