Interesting. I am assuming this means higher prices in China for these chips? A 15% excise tax is massive. Unless the margins on these chips were really high

wonder if this will be good for their stock prices.

I guess it provides some certainty that they won't be blocked from exporting to China... However the administration has shown to change these deals on a whim in the court of public opinion.

Looks to be a definite negative for both

Kinda puzzled about this. Why? Either they can sell chips or not. Seems like another revenue drain for the industry.

Today 15%.

Tomorrow 30%.

Or....0%.

Stay tuned.

“From an investor perspective, it’s still a net positive, 85% of the revenue is better than zero,” Ben Barringer, global technology analyst at Quilter Cheviot, told CNBC.

“The question will be whether Nvidia and AMD adjust their prices by 15% to account for the levy, but ultimately it’s better that they can sell into the market rather than hand the market over entirely to Huawei.”

Huawei is Nvidia and AMD’s closest Chinese rival.

Uncertainty nevertheless still looms for both U.S. companies over the longer term.

“In the short term, the deal gives both companies some certainties for their exports to China. For the long term, we don’t know if the U.S. government may want to take a bigger cut from their China business especially if their sales to China keep growing,” George Chen, partner and co-chair of the digital practice at The Asia Group, told CNBC.

Interesting. I didn't think it was legal for the US to do this but as the previous poster said

This has been going on for a couple of years now, but historically has only pertained to the highest tier Nvidia cards: LINK

I didn't see where in that link it mentioned Nvidia paying a percentage of revenue to the US. Link the right article?

I linked the correct article, but that's not what I was trying to convey. I was giving context to the back and forth of the US progressively restricting chip sales to China over the last couple of years.

This seems unconstitutional. Backdoor export tax

Trump said the export licenses for AMD and Nvidia were a done deal. But lawyers and experts who follow trade have warned that Trump’s deal may be complicated because of existing laws that regulate how the government can charge fees for export licenses.

The Commerce Department didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
Looks like there is work to do on this deal. CNBC

How is this even close to possible legally - President negotiating 1-off tax rates with individual corporations?
