Nebius in Talks to Buy Israeli AI Startup AI21 After Nvidia Deal Fizzles

AI21 Corporate: About Us

This is a continuation of Nebius’ efforts to build a relevant, full-stack AI offering. Expectation is that it would come in at a $2-2.5B mark, so I’d call it significant.

I’m loving AI’s takeaway on this-

This is Nebius saying:

“We don’t want to be CoreWeave. We want to be AWS.”

Ai21 and clickhouse this is going to be a monster. Does the board expect a dip on this news due to the pricetag for ai21?

NVDA was reported to have had interest in buying AI21 Labs as recently as Dec 25.

For some reason or another it didn’t happen. In steps Nebius.

Google had interest too

AI21 has long been considered “on the shelf,” with Google also previously exploring a potential acquisition. In recent weeks, however, talks with Nvidia have advanced significantly and have reached the most senior levels.

Nvidia’s primary interest in AI21 appears to be its workforce of roughly 200 employees, most of whom hold advanced academic degrees and possess rare expertise in artificial intelligence development.

Today, AI21 focuses primarily on specialized language models aimed at enterprise customers, where accuracy and reliability are critical and the tolerance for error is far lower than in consumer applications.

I’m no AI expert. But from what I understand AI21 originally had a goal to compete with the largest LLM players.

They now focus on more specialized enterprise solutions and claim to have far better accuracy versus the leading foundational models through their new product, Maestro.

This helped me understand a bit

Gemini:

The short answer is yes. If Nebius (NBIS) successfully acquires AI21 Labs, it would transform from a "landlord" that rents out AI hardware into a "full-stack" AI powerhouse that owns the "brains" (models) as well.

As of April 2026, reports indicate that Nebius is in active talks to acquire the Israeli-based AI21 Labs. This move is significant because AI21 is one of the few remaining independent labs capable of producing Large Language Models (LLMs) that truly rival the performance of OpenAI's GPT-4 and Anthropic's Claude.

Arkady is playing for keeps. No frickin’ around. This is a good place to be.

How AI21 Models Compare to ChatGPT and Claude

AI21 Labs develops the Jurassic and Jamba series of models. Here is how they stack up:

• Jamba (The "Speed Demon"): AI21’s flagship series, Jamba 1.5, uses a unique "hybrid" architecture (combining Transformers with Mamba technology). This makes it significantly faster and more memory-efficient than standard models like ChatGPT.

• Massive Context: Much like Claude is famous for its large "memory" (context window), Jamba supports 256,000 tokens, allowing it to process entire books or massive codebases in one go.

• Enterprise Focus: While ChatGPT is a consumer favorite, AI21 focuses on "Enterprise AI"—models designed to be more reliable, secure, and easier for companies to customize for specific business tasks

… Direct Competition: This would put Nebius in direct competition with "Hyperscalers" like Amazon (AWS) and Google. While AWS hosts AI21 models today, a Nebius-owned AI21 would likely offer its best features exclusively on the Nebius cloud.
The Bottom Line
If this deal closes, NBIS becomes a "one-stop shop." A developer could go to Nebius to rent the most powerful NVIDIA Rubin GPUs and, in the same interface, deploy a "ChatGPT-class" model that is already optimized for that specific hardware. It would turn Nebius from a specialized utility company into a major frontier AI player.

No one would have guessed that Nebius’s next 2bn would go toward acquiring an LLM, but damn do I like it.

I hope they can close the deal.
I like what I’m seeing in that Nvidia wanted to acquire AI21 for the talent alone—200 top AI specialists.

Nebius is about to really distance themselves from the field. I hope.

Cantor Fitzgerald weighed in on NBIS and gave it an overweight rating with a price target of $129.

I am assuming that the target date was noon...
