I took the MKT701 exam today w/ Darrat. It might have been the worst exam grade of my entire time at LSUS. The only other one that might have compared was the final in ISDS 710. At least there are only 3 exams in MKT, but I'm really hoping the case study graders are lenient to buy me breathing room on the exams. I really do not want this class to be the one that costs me my 4.0.

The FIN701 Exam 1 that had me a bit concerned ended up a non issue, scoring 100%.

What made the MKT 701 exam so difficult? Isn't it just based on the 4 powerpoints, or did he throw in a bunch of curve balls?

I also did bad on the MKT 701 exam. Looks like we are all in the same boat. It didn't seem that hard while taking it. Apparently my educated guesses on many of the questions were wrong.

Bad on the test #4. What the hell was that test in the first place? I'm thankful that it's only 50 points, but I will also be pissed if the tests end up costing me an A in the class. Can't say I didn't study hard either, because I did. I'll second the worst grade I've gotten on a test so far in the program.
I'm starting to wonder if it was a mistake to take Darrat.

Does anyone have a syllabus for BADM 790 PI ? Im still waiting for an opening, but I want an idea of the workload assuming that I triple up with it.

Email the professor and explain your situation. Mike is a considerate guy and shouldn’t have any problem with sending you the syllabus.

@Marek and @WhoNeedsSleep did you read the textbook or just review the slides? Had i just reviewed the slides I think i would have crashed and burned. The textbook really explained the concepts in detail which is what you needed to know for the exam.

The prof (Mike L.) said he was going to change things up after the term I took it since it was his first time teaching it and he wanted to gauge difficulty and workload. I doubled it with MKT710 and it was ok but their were a lot of group assignments involved.

I also had a green belt cert from my GE days so this was really a refresher. I don't know what you're trying to triple this with so I can't comment on if its doable or not.

Bottom line, I think its going to get a little more difficult but its manageable. Its not like an ISDS705 though, real time and effort needs to be put in.

I also did absolutely horrible on the MKT 701 test and I studied pretty heavily. The material he gave us to study was nothing like the test. That was the worst grade I have gotten on any test in the MBA program. As of now I am regretting taking Darrat.

The problem is, we are no longer supposed to require the textbook, so the tests should not be designed in a way that would require the text to do well. It's clear that his powerpoint is designed to be used in a classroom setting, with several items that were intended for additional clarification (All the words in red) during the lecture. If he had video lectures where he clarified those subjects it would probably have helped a lot.

Regardless, there is also a problem of the sheer volume of material involved. I studied for more than a full day, but it's just a lot to cover and remember. My MKT 705 class has weekly tests, which seemed excessive at the time. Now I understand that it actually makes a lot more sense for this kind of material. For me, the only saving grace of this course has been the discussion forums so far being worth more as a category than exams and case analyses.

I have yet to see how I did on the case analyses, but hoping that scoring is similar to discussion forums so I can keep my grade up. If I can consistently ace the 350 points from the writing portions, then the 150 points of exam pain can be mitigated. I did more than 10 percentage points worse on this test than my previous worst test score, and that was a particular brutal Economics test. In fact, this is the worst that I have EVER done on a test that I actually studied for and I've even gotten higher scores on tests that I didn't study for.

I'm sensing a trend here... except for WDE251 who ruined the curve for all of us (just kidding, there is no curve). I can't help thinking we are not the exceptions. I have no reason to hope, but I do hope that he'll take that into consideration.

That said, WDE... where can I get a copy of that textbook?

I did fine on the MKT 701 exam but I'm glad I ignored Darrat's advice about not memorizing definitions, because I feel like that's what got me through it. However, there was too much content for me to memorize everything, so there were some definite gaps in my knowledge.

Regardless of the exam, I'm just really disappointed in this course. I've already said it here, but it is laughable that we are studying nothing but Powerpoint slides in a *masters* program, which prevents us from learning the "broad concepts" Darrat told us we should really be focusing on. You've got definitions on the slides with a single company name in parenthesis afterwards. The only way to know whether that company is an example of performing that concept correctly, incorrectly, or something in between is if you have the textbook, which we have been told is not required. It's a joke.

Also, is it weird to anyone else that the weekly discussion questions and case studies seem largely divorced from what the slides are about for that week? It's as if I'm taking 2 different classes on Marketing.

Nope, didn't know there was a textbook available. Went back through the Moodle and can't find anything.

The issue I have is that he provided PPTs, which I read through 5 times. Then gave guidance to focus on broad issues and concepts. Then he went and asked for detailed bits on specific issues. It's like he said "Look a squirrel!", then smacked you upside the head when you turn to look.

I totally agree with your view of the MKT course. The PowerPoint slides as the only form of info is ridiculous. I sent you an email for a copy of the book. Thank you for offering it.

Agreed DD. I studied and did OK in the exam. nothing more
I am disappointed because I had Darrat for international marketing and the course was structured much better than this course.
It seems disjointed.

Darrat posted this in the office forum:

“Any text on marketing strategy or strategic marketing management would suffice as an aid to help clarify subject matter in the notes. I recommend Marketing Management by Kotler and Keller. “

** GET KOTLER AND KELLER **Someone posted the link a few pages back. Can’t easily find it on my phone.

Definitely understand being ticked considering textbooks are not “required” and ours was suppose to be “optional”. ITS NOT. I started the textbook week 1 and it’s obvious that the class aligns with the textbook and The PowerPoint is his lecture notes loosely pulled together. Read the text and all the slides make sense and serve as a helpful supplement to your own study guide; as detailed as the questions were, can’t rely just on the PowerPoint. Even the assignments correlate appropriately imo. I am having a very different experience with the class because I got the textbook. Actually enjoying learning about the complexities of marketing. (Textbook is a good read). PowerPoint title page is the chapter titles basically. He may have tweaked a word here and there.

Are you tired of me saying it? Textbook. :-)
