looking at moving up in the credit card world
Posted on 3/25/15 at 5:20 pm

I started out a few months back with the capital one credit builder card. Now, my credit is pretty good (mid 700s) and I'm looking to trade up to a card with better rewards and a higher limit. I definitely want low to zero annual fees, good fraud protection, and some rewards (cash back or air miles would be nice).
Please submit the boards recommended CC's I should apply for that fit these criteria, oh money Gods.

What "categories" do you spend the most on?

I went from having one credit card to 5 in about a 6 month span. I got the us airways for the 50k miles, the Barclay arrival plus, the ihg for the 70k points, and the United explorer card.
I really like the Barclay arrival plus as you get 2 times the points on everything. Be aware though as the points are not miles. You redeem points as a travel credit

I would start with the Chase Freedom. It's pretty easy to get and Chase is a company you want a relationship with in the credit card world.

Why?
I despise Chase due to a negative experience I had with them while in college. Said I'd never do business with them again and I haven't.
To the OP, you'll need to find a credit card that fits your spending needs and the rewards you are seeking. For me I have:
- PenFed Rewards Visa CC (earn 5 % back on gasoline purchases) that we use strictly for fuel.
- USAA AMEX CC (earn 2.25 % on gasoline and grocery store purchases) that we use strictly at the grocery store.
- Discover it CC (rotating rewards).
I use my Discover it CC for Amazon and retail purchases, as I receive an extended warranty for free on top of manufacturer's warranty.

I never knew this. I have the it card and never use it. Thanks for the info!

Both BOA and Wells Fargo for me.

- Amex Blue Cash Preferred: 6% Grocery + 3% Gas
- Discover It: Rotating 5% + legit card benefits like Will Cover pointed out + Discover shopping 5-20% back on purchases
- Citi Doublecash Rewards: 2% back on anything that doesn't fit above
- Original USAA Card: I would close it if not for CC history
As a 23 YO who doesn't spend a whole ton, I get roughly rewards of the following $500 AMEX, $200-300 Discover, 150$ Double Cash, 30$ USAA
I love the Discover because their partnership program compared to most cash back cards like AMEX Blue or Doublecash. I do all my rewards on gift cards that I get $.80 on the $1. My cruise is going to be 50% off due to that ridiculous deal they have. They also have ShopDiscover which got me absurd deals on major purchases like Washer/Dryer + Tailgate stuff

Overdrafted your account buying a crunchwrap at Taco Bell? I wouldn't hold that against Chase.

Chase freedom is the card you want.
5% Cash back from gas for 1/2 the year
5% cash back from groceries, restaurants, & amazon in different quarters each year

Amex blue cash: 6% back on groceries
Penfed Platinum Cash: 5% on all gas no limits.
Citi Double Cash: 2% back on everything and anything with no limits.
Avoid things like miles or other product based rewards. Cash is king and a better value.

Cash is never the "better value" it's more versatile - no question.
If I spent $60k on your Amex CP card I would earn $900 if I hit the grocery store cap.
If I did the same thing on my Delta Amex I've earned 96,000 skymiles - Thats without any of the miles from flying. That's strictly spending. I can redeem those miles for at least a $2500 ticket.
Like I said - Cash back is never the "better value"

What do you want - Where do you spend a large portion of your dollars? Which categories?
Do you want miles/ points for travel or just cash back?
