I keep walking into small retail, Big Box, and QSR and asking myself; How the hell are these guys still alive ?
I have been asking myself that for YEARS.
So in 2000 I closed a building company that had been very successful in St. Tammany Parish for 18 years. I had some cash and could open any business I wanted.
After 6 months of studying one business after another I finally went to my banker and said, "None of these business's make any sense." He says, " Yes, I know, we get dozens of them every week. None of them make sense."
Bottom line: Most business's don't make cents.

That's not unusual, at least it wasn't when I worked retail 13 years ago. The weekday shift people restocked and merchandised everything (or, if they were lazy, stood around and talked). Sales were made on the weekends, on holidays when people were off, and of course, during the Christmas season. I can remember being thrilled if I hit the $100-$300 mark on weekdays.
I agree. There's a reason it is called black Friday. That is the day that you get out of the red and into the black (and it's almost at year's end).

Oh and about Cold Stone -- I had to wait almost an hour to be served at the Burbank location. Sure there's a good bit of overhead. But with only one employee working you can realize some decent profit on a Sunday afternoon. If you want ice cream you will wait.

So buy one.
And watch your world fall apart.
Cold Stone is an total DOG.

There will be a retail/consumer product blood bath in the months to follow. The starbucks earnings report is the shot across the bow of what will transpire. The gov't knows this as well, and this is the reason they are pushing for another stimulus pkg. Feed the monster. This will only work so long.

Warning shots were fired months ago, Starbucks is just another hole in the side of the ship.

you're the first to put it together. I've considered using a picture, but it would give it away.

you are correct, but a drop of 97% is shocking for what was once (wastebucks) perceived as the pinnacle of expansion and growth.

Never really got into it, but I do appreciate Haynes' talent. He performed solo at Jazzfest a couple years ago; kicked total arse.

It was not all due to sales dropoff. Alot of the descrease in earnings was due to the write offs from closing all of the stores, etc. At least that is what I thought I read.

I don't give a shite how they spin it in accounting transactions, it's still bad.
Point taken, fwiw.

What about a rudamentary economic concept that with "extra" cash comes increased specialization of labor and innovation. Yes, "extra" cash causes waste, but this is the essence of the present society: "creative destruction"

Um.
Ok.
I recognized those words, just not in that order.

The big box stores were nailed by internet pricing. Even with shipping costs the net saves consumers 10%-30%. Store cost, taxes, workers cost $$.
Fast food places? They'll survive if they are providing low cost quick food. People need that.
But agreed: lean and mean is the way of the future business.
