I started a few different topics about MBA school, just wanted let everyone know and say thanks for the advice. I'm pumped to get started.

Congrats. The only thing bad about this is that you aren't in Austin instead.

I work with a lot of people who have been through it. It is supposed to be a good program.

What kind of grades and GMAT score did you need?

Red McCombs is solid. I imagine it has major pull in Texas, but probably doesn't have the national reach as the east coast/NE schools ranked a little higher.

Correct on both counts. But there's plenty of money and opportunity in Texas and a UT degree is respected on the east coast too, it's just that you aren't in the "word of mouth" network.

I had a 2.8 undergrad in Mechanical Engineering and a 680 GMAT. Grades i don't think have a very profound effect for professional programs, the GMAT matters some. They care more about the interview and your resume.

Yea, I really wanted to work while i did the program so my options were limited. Also don't play on leaving the south so I figure it was my best option. They have a pretty large Alumni base which is good also.

Solid GMAT, especially for that program. I think that definitely overcame the low GPA (given the major too). Work experience and a good interview = success. Congrats

Very good decision then! How much is it costing you?

Yup, agreed. I have only met one person that went to to Red McCombs MBA program and she was as smart as they come.
I see a few of the top 10 day-to-day with my job and most are impressive. Paying $150k to attend + opportunity cost of not earning income during that time is a TOUGH pill to swallow.

90k, its tough to swallow.

I'll bet any female McCombs MBA is significantly hotter than the average east coaster.

What made you decide to go back (and how old are you if you don't mind me asking)? Career transition or just position transition within company/industry?

I'll be 29 when i start in the fall.
I've always wanted to get my MBA, I've been doing R&D in the O&G industry then i just recently moved into operations. I'd like to get into management and possibly business development side of my business. I have a pretty good technical knowledge of whats going on and if I couple that with some finance knowledge I think it will make me pretty valuable. The MBA also gives me plenty of other options for my career that I wouldn't have without it, which is a big thing if I ever wanted to switch industries and move away from Houston.

Word. One of the guys here just started his (29 as well) part-time. They kind of imply that you need that to get to VP here. I like where I'm at right now and the progress I've made in the last year and a half (which is my entire working career), but its not the final destination so to speak. If I can't get to where I'm ultimately trying to get within this calendar year, I'll probably go back full-time somewhere. I just haven't decided how far up that ladder I want to try and climb.

Congrats, I'm nearing the end of the first year of my MBA now. It's been tough, but overall its also been enjoyable.
