GA Hope Scholarship? Any of you have any dealings/general feelings

I've been talking back and forth with a recruiter about a job in GA...I'm certainly not trying to count my chickens before they hatch, but I'm also not trying to be unprepared.
One of the things that we have to consider would be giving up a really, really nice annual 529 match from my wife's employer. However, if the Hope Scholarship program is legit, and stands to be around and not fail like some other programs have...maybe that offsets that match...
Any info/suggestions/advice you have is much appreciated.

I graduated in 2011 and Hope paid for my entire time at GT.
It is my understanding tho that they made the requirements to keep it much harder. I am also not sure if it still covers 100% or not.

What kind of annual match would you be giving up? Limitations on the match amount?

I have two nieces that are going to school on the hope. Getting into GT or UGA is really hard fwiw but hope applies to other schools.
my cousin also got it but he flunked out in his 2nd semester.

We can contribute 3,000 per kid per year, and the employer matches 25% of that....so thats pretty awesome and we are taking full advantage of that.

No real insight to give other than I know a guy who recently declined a promotion to another state because of the Georgia college program.

And...I realize that is a 1,500/per year benefit...
But the somewhat complicated part is the reality of whether or not we could ratchet back and/or reallocate some of that money we are saving for college.

the math on this is really easy. Just get teh value of the hope scholarship which is roughly 4 (years) * Tuition Cost Per Year Now * Rate of Inflation in higher ed costs)
Then compare it to the value of the match.
Considering UGA costs about $12k a year now, I don't see how the match would offer more value.

Not sure of the specifics but I believe there are certain payout levels now with the Hope program, not everyone gets 100%.

Right...looks like it pays up to nearly 3,000 per semester, which is still very significant, but does not appear to cover the current full cost.
From what I've gathered...tuition and required fees on 15 hours are around 5,915/semester at UGA and 3,711/semester at Georgia Southern.

There are some levels to Hope.
The “Zell Miller” is for elite students and pays all tuition.
The “Hope” pays most of tuition IF you keep a B average.

When I started in 2009, it paid 100% if you had a 3.0.
They changed it to 80 or 90% for a 3.0 and 100% for a 3.5 at some point when I was there. I was over it for my last checkpoint so I never paid.
I think it’s sfill going strong. Like someone said UGA is very competitive to get in these days. It works for the other state schools as well but UGA or GT are definitely the places your kids would probably want to go

A few other thing to keep in mind is Hope calculates the GPA differently than most High Schools, it’s only Core classes and certain academic electives. The GPA is unweighted. There is also a “rigor” component that requires recipients to have taken a certain level of science, math, social studies, foreign language, and English in high school.

Kennesaw State and Georgia State are also very good schools.
And realize alot of kids on the bubble will start at Gainesville State to transfer into UGA, or Perimeter College to transfer into GT. It is a big cost savings too. Not to get too political, but in Georgia, it is very helpful to have some kind of disadvantaged status such as being non-white, or being a female helps getting into GT, or if you are from a poor rural area.
Lots of white kids from the suburbs with 3.9 GPA have to start at Gainesville State before transferring into UGA.

JEEZ college is different than when I went.
Any thoughts on UNG? Seems to be a pretty sizable school and tuition there looks to be significantly more affordable than UGA?

I know nothing of UNG, but they run ads. I don't trust schools that run ads except during a football game the school is a participant in.

UNG has a good Corps of Cadets. As a male, I wouldn’t go to school there unless I was a cadet. I think they also have a decent Education program.
Hope/Zell Miller is still a viable program and will pay for a majoity of a students college expenses. It is backed by the GA lottery. Recently the government decided to allow some of the funding to also go to pre schools which is why they had to create tiers for the system.
The University System of Georgia has started to push more students away from UGA and to the directional schools around the state with the intent of putting a larger emphasis of on graduate work at UGA.
Also, the Hope covers a certain number of credit hours (I think 120) so if you come into college with credits from advanced high school curriculum, Hope will pay for graduate work as well.

UNG is actually a pretty good school. My son and his wife both went to school there. DIL in Accounting and son in Biology. Small school in a town with not a lot to do but they both enjoyed it. It does have a very active Corps of Cadets, the school started out as a military college. As other have said UGA is very competitive, hard to get into.
