For those that track expenses on a spreadsheet, what categories do you have?

I've been tracking our spending for 13 months now. It has definitely helped with identifying what we can afford when we purchase our next home. More importantly, it helped us see where our money is going.. to an extent..

Anyway, I have decided to take it a step further and start categorizing things. Here's what I have so far..

Income
--------
Mortgage
Insurance
Utilities (phone, home utilities, internet)
Groceries
Gas
Eating Out
Medical
Additional essentials
Non Essentials

I can probably lump Gas into a necessity because at some point, it just is what it is.

Groceries should be a category because we can look at what we're purchasing each month to see if it's truly needed or if we can look for different brands.

Eating out I want as a separate category for sure.

What do you all think I should add / consolidate?

I don’t understand why you would manually do this when there are multiple services that do this for you…allows your to spend the time on analysis.

I've been keeping a personal budget in excel since 2012. When I started doing it I had basic categories like yourself but now I've treated it more like a trend report for a business. I have a few large headings with subcategories beneath them.

Housing
Mortgage
Homeowners Insurance
Property Tax

Utilities
Power
Water and Sewer
Phone
Gas Service
Cable and internet

Transportation
Gas
Car Service
Car Insurance
Flights
Lodging
Parking/Rideshare

Investments
Brokerage
Roth
Crypto

Consumables
Food
Groceries
Alcohol
Bar

Miscellaneous
Sport/event Sites
Childcare
Gifts
Church
Entertainment
Gas station
Clothes
Hair
Medical
Other

Nice list. (although my personality desires to know none of this)

Just curious, what's the difference in Alcohol versus Bar?

Gin versus olives?

ETA: My GF promptly answered my dumbass question. Beer from walmart versus beer from Fat Cat Saloon

Like someone else said, it’s fun to have something you built yourself. And the fewer companies that have all my financial data the better

Interest expense - mortgage
Interest expense - CC / Auto / Other (if applicable)

I run an accounting firm and after a few years I found it easier for clients, and myself, to track this specifically because we have found errors on 1098s. Also helpful to show other cash outflow to clients for not paying down their CCs or other financed capex (or the spouse that is abusing a CC).

I’ve found a personal balance sheet to be very helpful as well. If you’re going to track income, might as well track your assets.

I keep a spreadsheet just like this one. It could easily be a word doc. I keep it granular like this with dates to make sure they are forecasting on YNAB for the next month. Helps me keep an eye on running balances.

For me, everything can fit in to 3 categories: 1) Essentials, 2) Fun, 3) Savings

Agree.

For $0-$100 a year you can get a system to break it down with solid graphics to be able to quickly check things out.
