Thinking about switching car insurance. Has anyone used esurance or Geico? The rates I have been getting quoted are good but I've read some negative things online about them increasing their rates significantly after you sign up.

Teaser rates. I'm pretty sure every company uses them now.

But if I pay for 6mo or 1 year at a time...is the rate aleast locked in for that time period? Or do I run the risk of getting additional bills even though i paid in advance.

No companies use teaser rates. No DOI would approve them

No. You pay up front for 6 months coverage. After 6 months, they issue you a new policy which can rerate you

If you qualify for USAA (nearly everyone does), you should look into them too. Premiums can be a bit higher but they are one of the easier to deal with + dividend checks

I just did my annual shopping. I ended up bundling both home and auto with Liberty Mutual. I previously had Geico but they only do 6 month auto policies and would go up a little on the premium every 6 months. Liberty Mutual does 12 month auto policies. I ended up saving money bundling and switching to them.

Find a good Independent agent.

It's b/c these companies have 90 day underwrite windows and offer the cheapest up front price possible sign up and off you go.. Then the underwrite and based off a # of things can and will increase if they deem it necessary.

Many saying progressive here , but trust me shop around.. In in Baton Rouge and have 5 companies right now that are beating progressive.

Call an independent insurance agent and make them shop all the markets for you.

We have been with GEICO for about 3yrs - 1 at fault accident and my premiums have increased about $150 over that period - still much cheaper than any competitor when I shop around even bundled with home

I am an independent in Mississippi and every now and then Geico is good but they don't fully underwrite on the front end so it leads to some adjustments. Check out Safeco/Liberty Mutual in Louisiana. They are the most competitive people if you fit in their box of customer thee want

I switched to Geico a few years ago from Liberty Mutual. Saved a ton of money. Our rates did just increase but it was like $6 or something not that significant. We have clean driving records also so I'm sure that helps keep rates consistently low.

Geico is captive, a lot of the low rate companies are..independent agents can't shop them

I was an independent agent, my auto insurance carrier was a company we could not sell, they were a lower rate then any auto policy i could shop myself (even after considering commission)

Independent agents are far more limited in their ability to save you money on auto insurance as opposed to home insurance

I work at a large independent commercial agency and we have a nice size personal lines book as well. Esurance is $200 more than the progressive quote one of our personal lines agents got me for a 6 month policy. I think whats best here is to get some online quotes as a reference but call a bigger independent agency that has access to all the companies and see what they can do. Average joe clicking coverages on one of those websites has no idea what they are getting either. I'd rather have someone who looks at personal auto every single day telling me what coverages and limits fit me.

An independent agent that can only shop one insurance carrier? Weird.

As for this thread, there are so many auto companies that have different "appetites" for insureds that it is impossible to save "Company A" will save money over "Company B".
Drivers History
Credit
Insurance score
Multi-line
Etc all go into the calculation.

Geico's customer service is great, and that's really it. Their rates kept increasing every 6 months (even though I never used it.."state-wide increases" was always their excuse), and I'm saving a lot of money with USAA. If you can, go that route as others have said.

I have no idea about how good the insurance product is but I will say Erin Esurance was a hottie.

I switched to Geico from State Farm a couple of years ago. Lower premiums that have increased slightly but not enough to leave them. I re-evaluate my insurance every year as well.
