Employer may be closing doors soon

I have already sort of been looking for new employment over the past few months due to not being very happy with the way my employer has been running things. Their decision to dramatically cut back on marketing and where to purchase leads has resulted in my income dropping significantly since August and at this rate I won't be able to grow my family, which is something my wife and I desperately want to do right now. No way we could afford daycare for multiple children if my income stays at the level it has fallen to recently.
In the last few days I've decided to have very honest and frank discussions with my supervisor and those discussions quickly led to the bombshell (well, not really surprising given the direction we've been heading lately) that the doors may well be closing at some point in the beginning of the year. He assured me that I will be given ample notice if it does come to that, though.
Either way, I'm actively and hardcore looking elsewhere now. I want to be loyal and stay and fight til the end but I've got to look out for my family.
My question is this: if we close the doors, and the employer is no longer paying into unemployment insurance, can I still claim unemployment while looking for something else (assuming I don't find anything by then)?
I've never been faced with this possibility so I'm completely ignorant to the process.
TIA

It's December 12, the beginning of the year is in 2 weeks.

Could you have him restructure your compensation so you could do the marketing and purchase leads you need to be successful?

Not at the very beginning of the year. The timeframe I'm talking about here is more like February-ish.

Because my employer made some nice concessions in negotiations when he hired me and as long as the doors are open I have a paycheck and if I can fight to bring business through those doors and keep them unlocked, I'm gonna fight like hell.
With that said, though, I still understand that my family is #1 and comes first. As long as I'm employed by this employer, my loyalty lies with them. But if I find something better then I'm jumping ship. I realize how contradicting those statements sound. Basically I'm there until something better comes along but as long as I'm there, I'm fighting like hell.

Unemployment benefits is based upon past wages, not current. So the fact that your company lays you off due to closure would not affect your ability to claim unemployment, in fact, the closure would make it easier.
And depending on the size of your company and where you are located, there are other provisions / benefits that would come into play as well if the company shut down.
If your supervisor is telling you that, it's time to go, and it probably means he or she won't be there much longer either.

Yea, I'm thinking the same thing.

Hey good for you I guess, but the writing is on the wall. This is almost assuredly a one way street of loyalty, if the company could let you go and stay open they would in a heartbeat with no second thoughts. It's your livelihood your talking about, go find another job before you end up without one.

Get out tomorrow OP. You've started multiple threads on your job now, its absolutely time to move on.
Seriously, apply to jobs desperately and take the first thing available. It doesn't have to be for good, or even a year. Just get something firm under your feet so you can take care of your family until you find the right situation.

The company in question in one of those threads, that everyone told me to take the interview for, went out of business years ago, restructured under a different name, and is still having major issues. I would have to be quite desperate to have taken that interview after learning what I learned about them.
Thanks for coming here with an answer to my question, though.

What Russian said.
I'll add that your supervisor did you a huge favor. You don't need to be "loyal to the company" but you can help him out if he needs it. Who knows, one day he might be looking for people in his next gig.

It's cute that you honestly believe that, and to some degree, I'll bet your buddy/employer believes that too. But I'll bet your definition of "ample" is going to be different from his.
From things you've said in your previous posts, the final day is going to catch him by surprise and there will be no runway left for you. Pull the eject cord now

I have been with my company for 18 years
I am in the same position you are in
Your loyalty lies with your family, not your employer, no matter how good they have been to you in the past
I promise they are not considering your future while planning theirs
Not saying do a piss poor job but I’d be fighting like hell for new employer, not sales for a company fixing to shut down
Good luck
