Looks like some sort of international sell off with a few exceptions.
Anyone selling into this sell off?
Anyone buying?

Hold your powder because I don’t think this is the end of the dip.

I agree, things are probably going to get even cheaper.
Japan Nikkei down 12.4% worst day since 1987.
Taiwan Stock Market worst day in 57 years.

But Germany looking pretty good… so why asian markets selling off more than others?

Tech bias.

Idk if I believe it completely, but the unwinding of the Yen carry trade in the short term explains much of the outsized moves we’ve seen considering the leverage usually employed in that trade.

Japan has been setting at 0% interest for awhile.
This has allowed them to borrow free money and buy equities in other countries as the yen depreciated. It was basically a free money hack.
This eventually made energy imports very expensive which made people mad, so they raised interest rates by like 0.15% to block the free money hack during their election year.
All those bank loans are suddenly very expensive, so Japan had to sell off their international equities to pay their loans. They probably have more equities in Asian markets, is my guess.

I am sitting all cash.
If I do anything today it will probably be to short any rallies, if we get any.
There may be some short covering rallies that make things bounce temporarily.

Posted on 8/5/24 at 7:22 am to dallastiger55
Ihrt is green premarket
Idk I might sell but it might keep going up because in theory it should go up when crazy stuff happens

I decided at the end of last year that this was going to be the Year of Securities for me. As such, I've bought nothing but federal debt thus far all year.
I don't plan any changes yet, but I'll be watching CIM for refi activities once rates come down to 4%-5% again.

Not sure if this sell off is geo political or economic or a blend…

Yeah pre-market is definitely hammering tech. Looks the cycle out of risk type of trade going today.

Both my ETrade and Fidelity apps are froze up.

I wish mine would freeze up. I have a meeting at 9:30 that is pretty important and I feel like I may throw up.
