it seems like the land under the house would be worth more than $1. Under what circumstances could the contingent liabilities make the property worth less than zero?

if I lived there I might. At those rates, you could buy an entire section of the city for a grand or 3.

You wouldn't want them--trust me on that one. Detroit is more filthy than New Orleans and Oakland combined.

I'm not sure how much of dent Detroit will put in the fim industry because the push has been to move production to right to work states to lower production costs. Something Detroit has not historically famous for.
true, but so many of the crew members work out of their LA unions that it really isn't as big of an issue as you think. The incentives related to local (Miiiichigan) spend are AMAZING.....40% tax credit across the board. That's insane, and they are already pulling a lot of business. Proudctions go where the bottom line looks the sweetest.

The thing, is people just don't want to live in Detroit and their politicians aren't doing anything to help. Kilpatrick makes Nagin look like a solid mayor...

Just be sure to put at least 20¢ down so you don't have to pay PMI.

Do they offer zero down financing?

Do they offer zero down financing?
No sir. The days of zero down, super-subprime WaMu loans are over.
An FHA loan, however, will require just a $0.03 down payment.

With these properties I assume the tax lien on these properties are greater than the value?

Amazing that the city has less people now than 90 years ago. Detroit has to be the most miserable major city in teh states.

Moments like this make me wish I was loaded. I would feel like Detroit's messiah buying all those crappy homes and cleaning it up. Then I'd buy those homes with people in them and knock them down too. Would be a great feeling cleaning up an American city.

what does it cost to rent a bulldozer for a day?
Posted on 8/17/08 at 10:55 am to Colonel Hapablap
my family just had to tear down a house out in the country and people they asked said it would cost something insane like 6 figures to take care of removing the house

does it have a health risk to it? I can't imagine it could cost that much for a bulldozer and truck to haul everything away.
