Also, there must be 4 years between earning the bonuses between earning the Reserve and Preferred bonus.
if i have a business card that's reserve, will that start my 4-year clock for a personal card?
i also have a plain sapphire from like 10 years ago that i never use. on the site it says i'm excluded but that doesn't make sense

When did they start this? At one point I had both but that was when Reserve first came out.

The business card shouldn't affect the CSP/CSR application.
I'm not sure their system counts that as holding two Sapphires, but if there are no UR stuck on that card, you could always cancel it, which is what I'd probably do.

No, CSR gets the better redemption at the Chase portal.
25% for CSP.
50% for CSR.
25% for CSP.
50% for CSR.

Is there a spend amount to justify the CSR? Wife and I both have one. We're downgrading hers but wanted to see if it was worth it to keep mine.
We used to do an international trip and at least one domestic trip a year but we had a kid end of last year. Between that and COVID I see us spending way less on travel in 2021.

That math is somewhat complicated.
You have to multiply your spending x the bonus categories CSR offers to determine the points you earn, then assign a value (1.5 cents for instance for each point). Then subtract the effective fee (ie minus the credit they give you).
You then need to compare this to what you could earn using alternative cards that may have higher multipliers in those categories or lower fees, other currencies (Amex MR) etc.
3x dining being added to CFU was a HUGE hit to CSR. Now CSR has 3x travel. Pretty broad category that includes airfare and hotels and more, but I can get 4/5x airfare with Amex. You can get 2x travel with CSP for a lower fee, etc.
No one answer but I hope it helps
The simplest calculation you can make though is to multiple what points you earn on the travel and dining and subtract what you're paying in the fee. If you aren't net positive you should consider a different strategy.

that's kind of why i bumped this thread. assuming i can get the 800k points, the rest of it would not be very optimal because i can get better deals on the current categories. my business card had 3x on a lot of things i use (like internet, cable and phone services, advertising purchases made with social media sites and search engines). it easily pays for the 95/year
i think i'm just going for the low-hanging fruit for now and getting a flex and it's $200 free money while i ponder the Amex blue

It is somewhat likely CSP and CSR will be revamped very soon. With the larger credit market and Chase's improvements to Freedom by creating Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited by adding 3x dining, the Sapphires doesn't make sense as a spending card.
No travel with Covid makes the CSR and it's high annual fee look a lot less attractive!

Looking for some recommendations for a good travel card. Just got a new job and it has 25% travel. I can pay then get reimbursed for all my own flights/hotels/meals so looking for something with the best points in those categories.

See several reports of Chase giving $150 statement credits for the sapphire reserve. May want to call and check if you can get one. No luck for me

Posted on 11/25/20 at 6:37 pm to fatboydave
I should have reported the 100k Platinum deal I scored with 10x points on groceries and gas up to $15k for six months.
Gonna abuse the shite out of that.

10x pts on groceries and gas

So end of year and time to get a bonus and burn some cards...
Was researching and caught this with the reserve...
WTF? So they take the 3X points from you and blow your travel credit?
Does the reserve have any redeeming qualities these days? Doordash, peloton, and 300 travel credit are the major benefits for a now $550 fee

Maybe I missed the news, but when did they do that?

blow your travel credit?
They are giving you $300 on travel as standard. Since people aren't traveling, this sound like they expanded the credit to cover other expenses so people could earn the $300 back. That's a positive change.

It has definitely lost a lot of luster due to competition from other banks and now from within with CFU and Freedom Flex changes. I'm curious if Chase will rework CSR next year.

For the time period they are applying your travel credit to grocery.... instead of earning 3xs they are burning your credit that you may want to use later on.
Unless I’m missing something
But nonetheless. At $450 you can almost justify the card, at $550, that’s a nah. Especially when the preferred gives you a higher sign up bonus.

Grocery earns 3x up to $1,000 through April so you're good.
I agree though that under it's normal bonus structure now it's becoming hard to keep it.

Just saw Amex Gold is ending their 100 airline credit Dec 31 of next year, wonder what they will do to replace it

Would like to get back into the Amex platinum, but haven’t found an offer exempting previous card holders.
May do the Gold and Sapphire to get the sign ups, get the airline credit now and after the 1st with the Gold and then ask for a product change upgrade to the platinum.
