About to apply for the SW Premier 50k point promotion.
I fly Southwest a decent amount. Only have a sapphire and freedom right now. No brainer to apply I am thinking?
ETA: Just saw this after googling around.

With a few easy steps, you can get $3,142 worth of travel on Southwest:
1. Open two of the Southwest 50k cards on the same day.
2. Meet the minimum spending requirement on each as soon as possible.
3. Then get the last 6,000 points needed to get to 110,000 qualifying points and a free Companion Pass on Southwest through the end of 2016 for $6,000 in spending or 13,000 Ultimate Rewards.
4. Designate a companion to fly for $5.60 per direction on Southwest every time you fly on Southwest, whether you’re flying a paid ticket or an award.

Something funky is going on with Delta. A flight I have been looking to book is always 70k miles one way for business class and now they are showing just one day at 90k and the rest 120k and up.
Was there a recent devaluation?

I'm seeing some similar odd things on American. Maybe it's just the timing of the flights we're looking at.

Yes, it's always a good idea to get an airline credit card if you fly with them a lot. You'll get miles, perks, and probably travel insurance.

For carriers of the Discover It, I was able to get the double cash back deal as a current cardholder. I contacted them via email/chat and they enrolled me. No new application, etc. needed.

I got the companion pass in January this year. It's valid for the year you receive it and the following year, so I'll have it for 23 months. It's awesome. This year alone I'll take 12 flights on SW probably spending around 120k SW points and bringing my wife on all of them for free. As long as a companion pass is available to achieve by points alone, I'll get it for me or my wife every 2 years.
I'm eyeing the new Montego Bay Route for a long weekend getaway. Roughly 5 hour travel time. Roundtrip is about 28 points so essentially I'm paying 14k SW points for each of us to go to Jamaica.
All inclusive Hyatt 10 minutes from the airport at 25k points/night that's been getting really good reviews. 4 days 3 nights almost completely free. Why the hell not....

So I can get all these reward points this year and then wait to purchase the companion pass with points next January?

They are denying people left and right if they've opened more than 4 new credit card accounts in the last two years. Co-branded cards do not appear to be an issue (at least for now).
Interesting. That shouldn't be a problem for me so hopefully it gets approved. My 2016 travel plans kind of hinge on the CSP 1:1 transfer.
Just wanted to update that my CSP got approved. Haven't gotten the card yet, but it just showed up on my chase online account this morning. Looks like it really just needed to go to the "senior analyst" for a quick approval.
Europe 2016. Here we come.

quote:No. You don't purchase the pass. It's awarded when you earn 110k points in your SW account in a calendar year.

So, if you want to start your companion pass in Jan 16, you'll want those points to post to your account in January 2016.
e.g. I applied for the both of the SW cards in November 2014. I started putting spend on the card in the last week of December and met the minimum $2k spend plus an additional $3k in spend on each card before statement closed on January 15, 2015. So, I had 110k points hit my SW account around January 20th, 2015 and the SW companion pass was awarded to my account.

You might want to consider the Barclay Arrivals card as well. You can pay for up to $440 worth of random travel expenses with it as well such as rail passes or discount airline tickets such as Ryan air or EasyJet.

Typically how many free nights does 85,000 Hilton HHonor Bonus points get you?

1 at a high end hotel. I believe every Hilton in NYC is 60k or greater. Hilton points are pretty worthless.
I'd recommend the Citi Hilton Reserve for the 2 free weekend nights at any Hilton worldwide over that one. You can pretty easily get >$700 in value out of that one.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into it.

Yeah the Conrad Koh Samui will be a must do on my next trip to Thailand, so I'll have to arrange it to have that fall on a weekend. They charge upwards of $700/night sometimes and by Thai standards, that's just stupid to actually pay for.

Holy crap that is awesome.

I'm seeing the same thing. I hope that's not permanent.

I can't find anyone else talking about it online. All of the flights are more expensive.

Good stuff. After I get married, need to get the SO on board to achieve this.
So you just churn every 2 years to get the companion pass?
I've put SW points to good use in the past. Got a RT from NOLA to Newark a few summers ago for only 10K points total. Direct flight too.
