I am a 30 year old male living around New Orleans, LA. I have a bachelor degree in History. Horrible choice in majors I made when I was 18 and didn't have a clue how life worked. I am working a dead end job that pays enough to get by. I am single with no kids and I want to go back to school. Will most likely look to do something online if I can. The thing is I am looking for a lucrative field to get into with growth opportunity. I am not looking to have a job I am passionate about. That would be a plus. I am looking for one thing. To make money without having to work nights or shift work. I hate that stuff. Its not for me. I know guys that love it. Anyway I am looking for to land a job as soon as I complete my degree. Just looking for ideas. I have a few things in mind, but am always looking for more ideas. Thanks in advance everyone. I truly appreciate it.

Well I guess I can't really help you because I work shift work but I had a degree in Finance and chose to go back to school at 30 as well for Process Technology. Best decision I ever made. Ended up getting a great job and although it's not something I'm super passionate about it is pretty interesting and pays well. Guess my point is blue collar fields are definitely something to keep in mind.

I completely understand. I thought about going back for process technology, but I did a bout of shift work with my job recently. Didn't try to make it sound like I'm better than shift work or anything like that. I just can't handle it.

Maybe find an internship while doing your MBA?

It's one or the other dude. Most won't take online degrees seriously. Maybe if its the online Flores MBA at LSU BR you might have a chance.

Don’t limit yourself to online only. Stay in Louisiana for the cheap tuition and find a job with flexibility.
After getting a useless bachelors degree I went back while working a full time job with tons of flexibility and in 3.5 years got another bachelors and a masters in STEM. Covered the vast majority of the costs out of pocket since I was working, but did take out a little in loans. Paid those off within 3 years of graduating.
Minor sacrifices for long term gains. You have to want it though. I’ll be the first to admit I fought a ton of demons those 3.5 years.

g is I am looking for a lucrative field ..... I am not looking to have a job I am passionate about.
For the most part this isn't how it works. Think you need to first figure out what you enjoy doing and go from there.

Yep, agree with other poster, you're going need to think about what you like to do. If you don't enjoy your work, or the type of work, or the people you work with, money will only help in the short run. Don't make the goal money and be miserable.
Do you have any skills that would lead you to a direction? Do you have anyone you know that has a job that fascinates you that you could take to lunch? Do you know how to do anything that would help you start a side business you could build up??

“Making money” as an objective for a career is generally not the best idea. Earning potential is an outcome of building the right skills and experiences that are valuable in the marketplace.

Do you want a low stress job that will pay well but allow you to go home every night without stress? If so, I'd get a good tech degree or just maybe go find a good skill based job right now.
Do you want a high paying job with lots of career options, more advancement opportunities and higher stress levels? Then the college degree route might be a better choice.

If you want to consider graduate school, there are numerous MBA threads on this board. Recommend using the search function or the sticky thread to see what already exists. In short, there are a lot of opinions and no one 'best' route. You'll have to do some introspection to determine what you are trying to get out of the degree and your long-term goals.

I was always told the best investment you can make is in yourself.
I have a couple friends who have dropped everything and started over. One in particular, was a engineer w/ a degree from LSU and a good job, wife and kids went back to school in Biology and got into med school. He worked hard, budgeted, and never looked back. He's going to make a great doctor because he is doing what he loves.
The ones who dont make it are the lazy ones who constantly try to find short cuts to get to the end goal.
Many of the larger publicly traded employers in Louisiana have tuition reimbursement programs. With a broad idea of the industry you would like to work in, maybe try to look for a job with a company that will pay for you to go back to school even if its an entry level position.
Good Luck, looking forward to hearing your success story in the next 2-5 years

So you already hold a BA in history--a great field that, properly studied, teaches you to analyze, compare, assess, and read/synthesize large amounts of info. If you don't feel that you acquired those skills, don't blame the degree/field of study--you simply didn't take advantage of the educational opportunities that abound in such a curriculum.
In which field are you currently working? What opportunities exist there?
Not sure where you earned that history BA, but many schools offer employment assistance to alumni, either through the college career counseling office or through the alumni association. If your school's alumni assn has networking nights, career socials, or other activities, go to them. Get some basic business cards printed up with your contact info.....get your LinkedIn profile in shape with a professional-looking photo.
Start thinking about the things you LIKE to do, and the things you are good at....how can you leverage those likes & skills to enter a new field? Let's say you're tending bar right now--you could possibly find work at a larger hotel in events management (you're degreed) or food/beverage sales, or find a job with a liquor/beer/wine distributor, or even transition into an institutional food service job (like with Sodexo or Aramark at a college or hospital).
Also, do you have any aptitude/interest in teaching? Louisiana has a whole bunch of alternative certification programs--you could be teaching while earning the MA or MEd degree. History undergrad could lead to elem/middle school social studies, not just high school history. Salaries for teachers w/graduate degrees aren't as paltry as you might think, and you can be pension eligible at a fairly young age. Info on alternative certification: LINK
No need to apologize for not liking shift work: I could never, ever do it. Overnight shift work has been linked to depression & other illnesses.
Finally, think hard about why "Money" seems to be your primary goal. Do you have a spending problem? Getting a better paying job won't fix any tendencies to overspend. If your current job has health benefits, strongly consider doing some therapy with a mental health professional who works with people who want to make career changes.

Im in the similar boat as well.
In louisiana, it sometimes does come down to who you know, not what you know.
Im looking at starting over, after getting laid off and bouncing around for 2.5 years. I find myself close to the "unemployable field" where no one wants to hire and it has been nearly impossible to get back into the field.
Boomers look at me, like its me. Friends look at me like its me. I just keep appling like I do everyday.
Im serious considering a trade, something like some of you baws say, leave the stress at the job and go home, then try to enjoy life, with weekends off, holidays, 401k, Health insurance havent had it for 2 years.
I will be paying attention to this thread.
