2016- 11k
2018-34k

Same price. New model marginally better features. Both bumper to bumper warranties will expire in January if purchased. Plan to put about 15k a year on this vehicle.

Which do you take? I have heard arguments for both.....

The 2016 would be my choice.

Higher mileage. Who cares about a two year difference.

How long would you keep it?

How many miles when you sell it?

If you don’t care about 2 years difference, wouldn’t your choice be the lower mileage car?

Probably keep it until maintenance out costs the value

lets say ballpark 150k

7-8 years

I would go 2018 with little thought, but I only put about 7,500 miles a year on my car. In your case, I would probably still take the newer car with better features, but I understand your indecision.

If it's an actual car, like sedan, I'd just opt for the better features for 20k miles. You can get well over 150k on vehicles these days.

This has more to do with satisfaction for the money, i used more personal preference and utility than running hard numbers here.

are they features you will use?

For some reason the wife wanted a sunroof. I think it's only been opened twice in two years.

Many factors

Cost?
Amount of time you plan on keeping the vehicle?
Estimate of total miles?
What are the marginally better features?
Would these features ever be used?
Projected maintenance cost?

If you don't care about the features difference, then go lower mileage. Mo' miles, mo' problems.

That being said, the 23k difference isn't a HUGE dealbreaker to me if you have your heart set on the 2018

Miles mean much less than general usage (seats, squeaky dashboard, etc) in this case IMO. 20,000 is nothing compared to 2 years of use.

Depends on how each accumulated their miles. Clearly 30k miles in a year was likely heavily used. 11k in over 2 years could be little old lady that rarely drives/used the vehicle. Could also be an every day driver with tons of short back and forths (not ideal driving habits for engines/parts).

The 2018 will need tires, brakes, and other maintenance items much sooner which will add cost. Check the tires, probably needs new ones now. Check oil changing records too. Check 2016 recall/notifications to see if inherent to problems.

Was the 18 a rental car / fleet car? That's a lot of miles for a car that new. Some people are apprehensive about that.

Last year I bought a 2006 minivan with 77K miles on it. An old lady who owned it and barely went anywhere died, and I knew the person who was selling it for her. I use it as an extra vehicle, mainly when I need to haul stuff or extra kids around.

She kept the minivan in great mechanical shape. it runs like a top.

However, a lot of the electrics and other non-powertrain stuff are starting to go to pot. I've had to replace two of the power window motors. The power lift gate no longer stays in the up position. The assembly that lowers the spare tire broke. Just stuff where "age" has more impact than "miles'.

Thanks for the replies. This is why I love this site.

We took the middle road.

Found a 2017 with 24k and better colors and 4WD for a little more $.

Tough call, but when it is so close you gotta go with what you will really want to be driving in for the long haul.
