I have used SilverTowne. Usually can get free shipping especially if you are a new customer. I'm in Lafayette and Coin on Treasure on Congress beats all the online places and tax free!

why is the SilverTowne Trademark 1oz .999 Silver Bar cheaper than some of the other bars like Blank 1oz .999 Silver Bar? they are the same weight and percentage of silver in both is .999.

Check the listing closely for blank, it may say engravable so they charge more assuming you will engrave something on it.

ok but theres some that are engraved that are higher then others that are engraved. no color added to it, which looks tacky, they are both just plainly engraved and are varying prices. Maybe its just some kind of sell they are having on their own inventory.

I have never heard one bad thing about Apmex. I also have some holdings with GoldMoney which seems very trustworthy, although they hold it for you overseas.

Not into the "hold it" thing. That kind of defeats the purpose to me. Ordered through Amex last week with some friends. Just making sure that's my best option. Looking to make a bigger purchase. Just learning and wanting to know what my best option was.

Do you get a better deal online or at the local coin shop? Stopped at a coin shop yesterday. Price was $1.50 over spot? Reasonable?

Yes $1.50 over spot is reasonable at a coin shop. My local coin shop charges $2 over spot for newbies, but I have been going there for years and he sells to me for $1 over spot.

I've tried to buy silver at a couple of local coin shops in LP area. They have been out of silver each time. Anyone know where you can get buy some at not too much over spot in the BR area?

My local shop in Lafayette always has silver in stock (bars, rounds, junk coins, etc). I'm suprised your local shop seems to always be out of silver. May not be a good sign for the survivability of the shop.

What makes the junk silver coins "junk". Is it because of how common they are and beat up?

It's the premium dealers charge in addition to the spot price (market price/ounce).

Example: If one ounce of silver has a spot price of $32.50 and the dealers "over spot" (aka "spot plus" or premium) is $2.50/ounce your total transaction would cost $35.00 (not including the 9% taxes due on all purchases under $1000).
