Based on a recommendation from my CPA, I switched to Cricket Wireless

I was complaining about how high my cell phone bill has been and my CPA told me to switch to Cricket. Am I the only person that has never heard of this?
Its AT&T's network, AT&T's service - its under the Cricket banner but its as low as $25/month (tax included) for unlimited everything. Data gets slower at 22 GB, which I never get close to.
About a week in, switching from AT&T and I notice zero difference. Its not better, its just the same.
My bill for three iPhones went from $237 to $90. Got the same discount on my Directv as well.

Color me intrigued. AT&T just jacked my rates up.

Something like 98% of all the lines in the country are owned by 3 companies, two of which being AT&T and Verizon. They own many of the small carriers you see advertised as well. Pretty much, Cricket or the like is exactly the same as the main AT&T service you are just the first one to get throttled.

I did read about this, but usually not an issue if you live outside a major metropolitan area. Even cities the size of NOLA, Memphis and Nashville don't see any issues

Did you bring the 3 iPhones with you form your old carrier?

Yes. AT&T is seamless because its the same network, but they can accept any unlocked phone from any network.

Google Fi is amazingly cheap if you get good Sprint or T-Mobile coverage

Been on Cricket for two years now. Bought unlocked iphones, but the low monthly rates over that time more than compensate for the initial expense. No issues at all with the service.

I've been wondering about these low budget carriers.
I can't imagine service being all that different these days, but I still remember me being the only one having service during Katrina with Verizon which kind of has a hold of me. It's always been clutch with service.

I've been telling everyone on the tech board for two years that they need to check it out. Uses AT&Ts towers , 20GB or Unlimited for $55. Only thing that might be a drawback for some is in order to get the full benefit you need to own your own phone.

One more thing to add is they have limited roaming, both in US (prob not the hugest deal) and internationally. I think it is limited to Canada and Mexico.
Also it’s a weird rec from a CPA but glad he is finding different ways to save you money, that’s what they are there for

The CPA was a personal user. He is one of those "don't overpay for nothing" guys like myself. It was really more of a friendly suggestion, rather than accounting advice. I brought up how expensive my bill was and he suggested me look into it.
I'm a natural saver. I've saved 30% of my household income since I was 28. Once a year I price out everything that I pay for - but Ive never looked into Cricket. My wife called me this morning just to say why didn't we know about this sooner - she has noticed that it is the same exact service for her as well.
Over the next two years, this will save me $3,000. I did see that it will not work outside U.S., Canada or Mexico, but that isn't a problem for me or most people. Anyway, I know the MT likes to save money and this was something I did not know about that I thought was worth sharing.

Was paying $115 for a single line with AT&T for a long time. Switched to straight talk at $35 a month and can't complain at all

The MVNO's (Cricket is a MVNO of ATT) get slightly slower data service than the primary provider. For many, that may not matter.
I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile over a year ago. I went from an 8gb family plan with 2 phones for $180 (incl about $60 in phone charges) to $90 for unlimited data and they paid off my phones to the tune of about $400 total. i've been very pleased with T-Mobile in cities. It's not as good in rural areas, but I don't venture off the beaten path too often.
Also, T-Mobile gave me free MLB TV for the season (they did this last year too apparently) on their T-Mobile Tuesday deals. I have watched countless extra hours of baseball this year for free, which is great for a cord cutter

I have looked into Cricket and will probably be switching my mother to them as they have one of the best plans for low data usage.
I got on a virgin mobile deal last year that was $1 for a year of unlimited data service uses the Sprint Network. I had Sprint before and have noticed no difference since switching. After my year is up, my plan is $50 dollars a month for unlimited, and no contract.
My friends all made fun of me when I switched to a pre-paid phone plan last year, but I love to remind them every time my payment is up that I just paid my phone bill, it was 8 cents.

Anyone tried Xfinity mobile? I have Xfinity internet (no cable or landline) and from what I can tell, they give you the talk and text and 100 MB of data for free (not really free but included if you are an internet customer) and you only pay for data which can be by the Gig or unlimited. Maybe that is how most are now anyway where you are only paying for data?

The big carriers don't even give much in the way of phones anymore anyway.

Help me out. I currently have a 2 year contract with an IPhone 6 Plus that expires next March. After my contract expires, can I take my IPhone and get Cricket Wirless or do I need a special phone for that?

That's it. You can take your phone and go to Cricket.
The issue with Crocket is its not good for folks who want the brand new $1000 phone every year. If you own a phone, its as simple as switching over. If you need a phone, you will have to purchase it outright, they will not finance it for you.
