Atypical things you don't pay retail for...

One of the first lessons I learned from my parents was to never pay retail. My wife has cringed and slid out of the seat at car dealerships, but then been flabbergasted when we bought a new car at the same price we got quoted for a three year old used car initially.

But what are some things you don't pay list price for? Mechanic work? Hotels? Mattresses? Watches and jewelry? Food?

Share what you negotiate that other people may ball at that those of us skilled at the art of the negotiation and deal may nod and admire you approvingly for!!!

I hate people like you.

You're embarrassing to be around.

If you have to haggle it down like a street bum, maybe you should look at a cheaper item.

The few people I know like this have turned my disdain into hatred.

I had a guy I work with flip out over an 11.00 ticket for pictures at a store one day. He griped enough that the manager came out and gave him the pictures for half price.

He grinned, paid, and walked out.

I hope people of your kind get broadsided by a tanker truck loaded down with gasoline and you die a fiery death.

Hey, no hard feelings bro. I enjoy keeping as much of my money in my pocket as possible. Whether it's mortgage rates and origination amounts or prices on a new car, I've saved myself and family thousands of dollars and put money in their pockets.

I'd rather do that than give my money away in situations where I didn't have to.

Working in the mortgage business helped crystallize my perception of folks that adhere to your frame of reference on subjects like this. There were many customers whose situations ended up costing them more than what they originally told myself and my company was their "bottom line". Yet when I got the deal done, regardless if it met their bottom line requirements, I was never afraid to pitch the deal.

If they said no, I understood why. But many, many people said yes, regardless. Ultimately, I'm not afraid to ask for-or be told no on-a deal.

But again, to each their own!

I'm like you. I don't haggle. But to some people it's a game that they enjoy. My cousin and I were driving back to my house after golf. He's rich. He saw a watermelon truck up ahead and told me to pull over.

He reached for his wallet and took out all his money except for a dollar bill. We walked up to the truck that had a big sign "Watermelons...$2".

He picked out a melon and whipped out his wallet in plain view of the seller and said "Damn, all I have is one dollar. Guess I'll have to pass on this."

The seller said "That's OK, you can have it for a dollar."

He's really not a jackass. He just likes playing the game. I can't do it.

I don't haggle over cars, jewelry and things that people expect to haggle over. I just give them what I will pay and walk away if they don't take it.
I don't haggle over everyday items like grocery, walmart, etc. I just pay the asking price. If I don't like the price, I get it from a different store.

. With a new car losing about 50% of its value or more in 3 years I would say either they really tried to sucker you in with the used car, you compared 2 extremes of options on the same model, or this is total BS.

Depends on the situation. For the most part, I pay what's asked or don't buy from that business. I obviously haggle on big purchases like cars. I'm currently in the market for an automatic watch. I have a price in my head of how much I want to pay based on a reasonable markup from the grey market price. I've walked into several jewelry stores and walked out with no watch. That said, I would never sit there and argue with the person behind the counter.

Started looking at a 2011 with a sticker of X. Asked me what I wanted to pay for the car. Responded that I wanted to pay as little as possible, and if that was his best price.

Dude never moved off STICKER on the 2011 because I didn't give him a starting point to work off of, which is not my job in any way. His job was to give me his best price, which I know is not sticker. He refused so he lost my business.

Went to the other location of the dealership here in BR the Monday after the Friday this went down. Got there at 11, used the EXACT same technique in negotiation and received an offer, a second offer, and then a "best and final". It was the same price as sticker on the 2011 for a 2013 with less than 50 Miles and we finalized the price by 2pm.

No BS. I view it as a game to an extent. One that ends with me either getting more for my money, or keeping far more of my money than the salesperson wished that I was.

maybe 20 years ago but vehicles don't depreciate as fast as they used to because of the demand for clean 2-3 year old vehicles(especially trucks)

This is why I was talking about not low-balling my mechanic,A/C guy, plumber ect. Don't like the price then get a different quote. Applies to most or all service type jobs.

Now for a product that is already made and ready for sale, then you may proceed with thy haggle. But to awnser the OP question: no, I hate haggling. Only place I might haggle is a garage sale or flea market.

car negotiating is a absolute must. If you go in paying asking , then you are getting screwed. the dealer will always "win" after any amount of negotiating, but if you don't have the balls to negotiate and "save" yourself some money, you are making a poor financial decision.

My general rule of haggling is that the more creepy/annoying the salesperson selling the product is, the more you can haggle. Typically car dealerships and furniture stores. Also jewelry stores. Basically the places where they expect you to haggle.
