I'm thinking BP or XOM.

I was off. It seems to be Anadarko which is quite suprising. Didn't know they had that kind of money.

Apache investigation

So now what? I'm ignorant as to what this really even means. Does this have any legs or is it pretty standard?

Rumor I saw elsewhere was CVX, although it seems unlikely to me considering their recent actions and the issues they face with Gorgon/Wheatstone.

I don't see it being BP. Tillerson has hinted that they have plenty of cash on hand for an aquistion just wouldn't have thought Apache.

I think the key is its got to be someone that wants to get into the Permian. That's Apache's key position.

That merger happened in 2010.

Conoco would be my guess based on recent strategy shifts.

Conoco is in the process of getting out of all offshore including deep water. Don't see them buying apache just to turn around and sell half it's assets off in this market.

Anadarko approached Apache about a takeover offer. I'll make that my guess for now.

Apache has been doing the same:

Apache August Investor Presentation

Conoco's stated strategy shift plays right into the majority of Apache's assets - mostly NA, very little Europe/North Sea and other (Egypt)

EDIT: Guess not

Anadarko has withdrawn their offer. It's not them anymore.

Even if they have pulled the offer, Anadarko stock is now basically at a 5-yr low. I'm assuming they will survive the downturn and rise afterwards as oil rebounds. Any reasons the stock is not a good buy right now?

I would put them on the shelf for a little longer.

They turned the offer down and refused to negotiate. I'm sure some shareholders want to know what premium Anadarko is willing to pay

This is pretty standard anytime a deal is made or not made, someone will bitch and the law firms will hunt down some people to make a claim.
