Your company expects those sales reps to make it rain, then turn the spigot off when the supply is dry.

It's like both sides don't understand each other. And that's kind of healthy. Ops and sales should always be bumping heads......that is until AI is able to create predictive flows....until it can't.

They aren't going to be paying UBI for 350 million people. Likely it will be on a tiered structure and everyone won't be out of a job so the 350 million number is nonsense. As someone already said when UBI becomes a thing and eventually it will the poor will still be poor (and low iq) the middle class will get some scraps to stay afloat and the rich will get even richer. Same shite as always.

The wild card that ties into all of this is The Great Wealth Transfer that has already started from Boomers to their GenX and Millennial heirs. This will enable some to completely exit the workforce early if they want to and its going to be interesting when all of these Boomer paid off houses potentially hit the housing market. I assume some heirs will keep and some will sell. If you look at this whole thing it is a lot of moving pieces the next 5 to 10 years that will reshape the country.

Our government doesn’t really function so I don’t buy there being any nuanced stricture offered by Washington that doesn’t either bankrupt us or fall short of its intention.

Look it's your life, but there is a wide gulf between sitting around and doing nothing and taking a minimum wage job stocking groceries lol.

Not to mention the likely fact that you'll be getting the nights and weekend shifts at least to start out.

If I had the scratch to retire today, I can guarantee I'd be "busier' in retirement than I am now.

Surgery on the other hand is a different story. Even if machines can do it, which they likely will be able to in the next 30 years, getting humans to trust the machine will be the more difficult deterrent to overcome.

Its already happening with ISRG Intuitive Surgical. Once the robots are trained at doing the same procedure over and over why pay an expensive Surgeon? I mean isnt the anatomy of a human the same across the board?

I'm more worried about my kids than myself. I'm 48 and I don't see my job going away in the next 10 years. I'll likely be in a position to retire early at that point unless the market tanks for the next decade, which is also possible

I mean sure your job may be safe (debatable) but if enough people become unemployed, the housing markets crash, investments crash and wages/spending crashes. Nobody is immune from all of that, even if you still have a job. We need jobs and as many of them as possible. Anything that removes jobs without adding new ones is extremely bad for everyone.

ETA this isn't even commentary on what may or may not happen with AI specifically but it is extremely naive to think that just because your job is safe, you are safe.

Yeah, if enough people lose their jobs these companies doing mass layoffs are going to tank their own businesses.

That’s a public policy matter though. This whole thing is.

I'm same age as you and it's definitely getting concerning

Sufficient? Yes. Enough for basic food, water, shelter, and a bit of money to spend. But that’s probably all it would be for generations, eventually pushing towards a median where no one is wealthy or poor as the rich have their money split between descendants. No one will get rich or feel good on UBI

Our government has proven to be completely incompetent no matter what party is in charge. Seriously governed by corrupt morons.

I have zero faith they are even preparing for this.

They are so so self absorbed in grifting and getting rich and pwning each other they could give a frick about us.

I worry that let’s just say by some miracle I keep my job but many don’t, that’s going to turn good neighborhoods and schools bad eventually.

Nice areas could start looking like the rust belt.

I really hope I’m overreacting.

I work for big oil. I’ll retire next year because I’m tired of it. Could have retired a few years back but might as well get paid until my youngest graduates high school. So, no, I’m not terribly concerned and would actually relish and welcome layoffs and severance. I’m 53.

I have no idea how disruptive AI will be, but the philosophy we followed and would recommend to others is the following: save till it hurts. Save everything you can. Live in a home and buy cars that do not preclude you from fully funding your savings/retirement accounts.

This is what we did and I have no regrets.

There will be a time period between majority of white collar people losing their jobs and UBI. This will be the time that really separates the rich or “well off” in the future vs the poor.

An upper middle class family loses their jobs fairly early on - they continue to spend too much while politicians promise UBI is coming. 1 year later they’ve burnt through everything they have, and finally here comes the low baseline of UBI. They end up with keeping their nicer house, but can no longer afford to upgrade their lifestyle, and they can’t afford nice vacations ever again. There’s not enough ways to save money or make more money now.

Vs

A different family also upper middle class work with AI better than most. They keep their jobs til after UBI starts. Their money lasts much longer and they’re able to afford a better lifestyle for longer. They can afford nice vacations on the money they saved up

Good for you - but unless you become skilled with what AI can do in your respective fields you will eventually be replaced by someone in your respective fields who can also use AI tools skillfully (and that’s something that applies to most professions, no earthshaking insight).

I’ve never heard the term UBI in my life and have no idea what it means.

Haven’t even thought about AI taking my job.

I want to do something. I’d probably try and get on at a ranch somewhere being a guide.
