Anyone know Hess’s history in high school? It appears by his numbers and innings pitched he was a starter. Along with starting mid week games last year. I know it’s a completely different level but I think we are jumping to conclusions saying he’s only a closer at this point. I think the kid needs time to figure out how to approach starting at this level.

quote:

Named a 2016 Perfect Game first-team All-American ... rated among Baseball America’s Top 400 college prospects ... posted a 7-1 record in his senior year at Liberty Christian Academy with a 0.60 ERA, 110 strikeouts and 11 walks in 58.2 innings .. a two-time first-team all-state selection in Virginia.

These are high school numbers similar to Alex Lange. As fans we tend to remember the most recent role. The kid can start games. To say he’s only a closer is premature. Give it 3 weekends minimum.

High school numbers mean nothing without context. Small private schools were full of those type of numbers and kids batting close to 0.500.

was it just me, or did the umpire seem to have a really tight zone? I know it works both ways.

Starting games in high school at Liberty Christian Academy =\= starting games at LSU against top competition. His personality is made for closing.

He’s going to get 3 weeks regardless because we don’t have any other options

as he said, he didn’t have FB command. Without it everything else will not work REGARDLESS of where he is pitching.
As other posters have pointed out, this isn’t high school.

Agree with you on timing though. Lange suffered through many mechanical issues his time here including the start of last year. He was just bad at times, BUT he always battled and you knew he had that extra grit. Hess hasn’t proven that.

Exactly.

Hell I had an era of around 1.00 and hit like .495. But it was small arse private school baseball. I remember pitching to Mikey Mahtook in travel ball once.... i don't think that ball has landed yet

At the beginning of last season, wasn’t it discussed that Hess had some control issues and that’s why Walker got the weekend start to begin the season and never let go of it? Not to take anything away from Hess for last season b/c he was great but maybe this is a little more of who he is but he got in a groove late. Hopefully he can regain that soon. Not giving up on him just yet.

When Hess flipped the switch at the end of the year everyone forgot that he had trouble throwing strikes up until that point. If I remember correctly, he gave up the lead at for the second Tulane loss (wasn't a close situation).

I have much more confidence in Hess to get stuff worked out than Peterson. Once again it's early and its baseball.
