My friend and his wife left early due to the heat. They still haven't fully recovered. They weren't the only ones.

I sat next to a couple of Detroit fans at the Saints game today. They went to the LSU game yesterday and said it was the best football experience they have ever had. They said Michigan and Ohio State games don't compare. So small crowd size or not, Death Valley still has it.

That's really good to hear. I tell people up here all the time that nothing in the Big 10 compares to a good SEC game in Tiger Stadium. I was at the USC game in 78 (or was it 79?) and at the Bama game in 2012. I'll never forget either experience, but I've been to a lot of other games that were not that far off from that level of intensity.

I know there are many causes for the problems with attendance, and believe me, as someone who was born and raised on the Gulf coast, I don't know how anyone could sit in the east stands yesterday right in that sun with the temp at 90+. (Hats off to all that stuck it out in those conditions.) But whatever the cause, it's noticeable to outsiders, and I would hope that the powers that be would do some things to improve the gameday experience (starting with NOT trying to soak every last cent out of anyone attending the game).

I was at the game. The crowd at kickoff was at best 80,000. Visible empty seats on the east bowl and the upper decks were notably sparse.

No kidding. The only folks that should have been embarrassed Saturday were wearing orange and blue.

This was the West sideline at the end of the game. What was seen on tv was due to heat.

I would imagine that today was not too good a day for them.

I was proud of the crowd. I have sat in 303 for 35 years and it was a hard day. After the intro of championship team I went into concourse and there were hundreds sitting on ramps trying to get heat relief. After a few defensive stands, it got pretty damned loud so I am proud of that group. Ole Miss was down a third at start.

That's great to see. I wish Alleva would push CBS to show shots like this from time to time during a day game when the sun is blazing hot. Like it or not, visual impressions matter, and what people saw was lots of empty seats. (The article I quoted just proves the point.) Most people just have no idea what "hot" really means in the Gulf South, so a little education might be in order. Again, the LSU people should really push CBS to offer some perspective. A couple of camera shots of the west stands and a comment from the sideline reporter would go a long way.

There were a shitton of people under the stands on the sunny side.

And the ones that were in the bowl were loud when it counted.

I was in the NEZ end zone. It was absolutely brutal. Hottest I can remember being in the stadium. Made it the whole game but felt terrible afterwards.

Not a single player stood for the anthum, so maybe that played a roll.

Nice try. Players are in the locker room when the anthem is played.

I was in the upper east side and it was as beastly hot of a game I ve ever been to and vendors ran out of cold water at halftime. Many people were in the concourse only coming out for portions of the game, even Auburn fans. Several people were woozy from the heat, esp early in the game. But they mostly stayed and the noise level in the 4th quarter was LOUD. An Auburn fan seated in the row behind me asked about crowd size and I told him Tiger Stadium holds 102,000. He admitted Auburn holds 84000 and if this crowd was in their stadium it would packed.
