But you said you wanted a 6'4" first baseman. Which is it?

Still wondering why he doesn't pitch because he can throw it like 120 from 3rd base...

I want a true, big first baseman. Not a left fielder that needs to fill in at first base because we don't have any on our entire team.

I thought Moore was considered to be Ross's backup at catcher.
He came in as C/IF. By the end of fall practice he was spending the most time at 1B. He had a very good fall at the plate and since Ross did too Mainieri said he was thinking that Moore was gonna be the 1B.

Dear Leader, did you see my "tickets delayed" thread on the Ticket Exchange Board?

Smoke had a team full 6'4 220 1st basemen. He played them at 1st 2nd 3rd rf lf. We were awful.

Very well said.
Moore's a big guy with pop from the left side of the plate, something the lineup desperately lacked last year. Tyler can play catcher but Ross seemingly has locked down that position for now with Snikeris in the backup role.

Did Moore see any time at 1B?
Yes he was playing 1B for the purple team.

He had a game winning hit against Alabama in Hoover in 2010.

Mainieri has high hopes for Moore. He makes good contact with the ball (i.e. doesn't K much) and, like you said, he is a LHB. He is a fine kid too--I know his family. Wouldn't it be great to see a freshman contribute? Most can't handle the pitching at this level, but Moore could be one that can---like Barbier in 97. Of course it did not hurt having Larson and Furniss hitting behind him!

why does he have to be 6'2"?
you didnt like Blake Dean?
sean ochinko?
matt clark?
Matt Gaudet?
all these guys played some 1st base in the PM era and were good hitters

I mentioned Clark. All others were converted from another position. I want more Clark's. I know you can't always have one, but at LSU, you should have one more often than not.

I have been told Skip Bertman didn't "recruit" 1st basemen after the NCAA limited the number of scholarship players. He offered kids that could play "down the middle". He recruited 4 positions. Catchers, Pitchers, Shortstops, and Centerfielders. Shortstops and center fielders are typically the best athletes on the team and can move to the outer positions. Mainieri does it the same way.

I doubt Eddy Furniss was any of these.

Was there a limit on the number of players Skip could recruit when he got Eddie? I was told he recruited players just to keep them from going to other teams. When you have only 27 scholarship players and only 35 on the team, you don't have that flexibility. Just a question.

The 27/35 limit has only been in place for a couple of years. But the 11.7 total scholarships has been around since the early 90s.
