Btw, Mason Katz was at first base for most of the practice.
He was there quite a bit at the end of last year, too, as I recall.
3 weeks from tonight, Russian. I'm getting pumped.

I can't wait to see that thread started again this year.

I really love his big diamond ear rings. Breaks me that he can't wear those on the field.

I just don't understand why we can't sign a true, 6'4, 220 first baseman with power. Haven't had one since Clark, and I couldn't even tell you the last one we had before Clark. Nothing against mason, he is a hell of a player and plays with great emotion, but I'm tired of seeing 5'8" first baseman at LSU.

I agree with this 1000%. Not saying first base is a joke or anything, but why not try to get some big overgrown LEFTY who kills baseballs, but maybe can't play the field great. It is definately a hitters position. As is RF and LF and pretty much CF and a little bit 3B.

Katz is 5'10".....

I hope Katz continues where he left off at the end of last season. Dude was a doubles hitting Machine.

he hit well at the end of the prior season too. gotta get more consistency.

Do you follow the MLB draft what-so-ever? Colleges getting a 6'4 200lb first baseman with power is quite rare.
In fact LSU does have a kid by the name of Joey Gallo committed to LSU, but chances are he's going in the top 2 rounds.
If you're in fact "tired" of seeing small college players blame the MLB for signing the top kids out of highschool.

Thats the part that sucks about college baseball.
The best football players go to or through college to get to NFL.
The best baseball players probably won't go to college, ( some do ), but just bypass it for minor leagues.

That's like saying you don't understand why Trent can't sign 5-star 7-foot centers who average 40 pts/20 rebounds per game. Or why Les can't sign 5-star QBs who can thow throw ball from endzone to endzone on one knee and run a 4.2 40.
Because they don't grow on trees. That's why.

Did Moore see any time at 1B?

Moore, Katz, and Dozar were rotating at the start of practice.
I think Moore's the best fit, but we shall see over the next 3 weeks.

I thought Moore was considered to be Ross's backup at catcher.

I don't know how anyone can have anything bad to say about this kid. He gives his all every time he steps on the field. If bigger, stronger players gave the same effort on every play and at every at bat who knows what they could accomplish.

I'm sorry, but every big time program has a first baseman that is 6'2+ with pop. LSU is the only school worth mentioning that year in and year out moves a guy from another position to "fill in" at first base. And to compare LSU baseball to LSU basketball is just insane. If you were to say Kentucky basketball instead of LSU basketball, then you would have a point, but Kentucky signs 5 star, NBA caliber players every year.
There are also plenty more 6'4 first baseman out there than there are 7' centers.
Terrible analogy. Sorry.
