Anyone know where I can find yards after catch stats? Seems like LSU receivers never got many. Whether it was poorly thrown passes or lack of separation, yards after catch seemed to be hard to come by this season. Wanted to see if I could verify that.

It's the routes

It’s because every throw JD makes is a comeback where the receiver is turned back towards the LOS. It’s the only throw he’s not scared to make

I'll be honest, seldom did we have passes/routes where the QB was ever hitting people in stride. Almost everything is the WR comes back to the ball or an out route.

He also throws both late and behind his receivers instead of leading them where they can outrun the defender.

He’s just not very good as a passer. And regressed the last several games

on LSU sports dot net....
look @ Football schedule and the pdf of the box score
Game Stats pdf

> 1/2 of LSU pass yards came from YAC
of the 22 receptions, the avg distance was 4.2 yards with almost 5 yards of YAC
we posed no vertical threat last night and only had a handful of explosive plays vs TAMU.

It’s because JD rarely hits our receivers in stride

through 12 games...

our receivers catch the ball ~6 yds downfield with ~5 YAC or ~11 yds per reception

against the SEC that's ~5 yards downfield with ~5 YAC or ~10 yards per reception

Against Florida and UAB, our receivers were 9.3 yards downfield at the catch. Against Auburn, it was < 3 yards downfield.

I was thinking about this earlier. The biggest issues I can see are: 1) He hardly ever throws to receivers in stride to allow them to pull away from defenders. 2) (This is the biggest issue IMO) He waits till receivers are completely open. He never throws as they are coming out of breaks or starting to get separation. He throws after this has happened and by the time the ball gets there defenders are closing in for the tackle. The receivers end up having no space to maneuver for extra yards.

When your routes are comebacks, sit downs and outs, you won’t have a lot of yac.

I compiled the data for the year based on the game logs from the box scores from https://lsusports.net/fbstats/

LSU had 2899 yards passing with 1341 YAC Assuming I did not miss anything. That is on 264 receptions of 384 targets.

Works out to 10.98 yards with 5.08 YAC per completion. So a pass 5.9 yards down field with 5.08 yards after the catch.

Below are stats that I find interesting. Not the total targets is 6 less than the teams pass attempts for the year. Not sure if that is because throw aways, intercetions, or other tings are not counted as targets. I used catches/Targets as a crude catch rate (I am not sure if targets here are catchable balls which I think is usually used in catch rate calcs).

Malik Nabers- 58/79, Catch rate 73.42%

Kayshon Boutte- 42/62, Catch rate 67.74%

Mason Taylor- 27/41, Catch rate 65.85%

Brian Thomas Jr.- 25/39, Catch rate 64.1%

Jaray Jenkins- 24/38, Catch rate 63.16%

Kyren Lacy- 19/27, Catch rate 70.37%

Josh Williams- 18/21, Catch rate 85.71%

Jack Bech- 14/20, Catch rate 70%

John Emery Jr.- 11/17, Catch rate 64.71%

Noah Cain- 7/13, Catch rate 53.85%

Chris Hilton Jr.- 7/10, Catch rate 70%

Kole Taylor- 5/8, Catch rate 62.5%

Armoni Goodwin- 4/6, Catch rate 66.67%

Jack Mashburn- 2/2, Catch rate 100%

Evan Francioni- 1/1, Catch rate 100%

Team- 264/384, Catch rate 68.75%

This is just raw data only marginally compiled into a format that is of interest to me. Draw your own conclusions from this if you wish, I am not drawing any conclusions. Stats just always grab my attention.

Yards after catch is a lot easier when you dont have to stop all momentum to catch every pass

I would be shocked if we did well here. Denbrock doesn't seem to scheme guys open.

You watch the LSU offense and then the Miami Dolphins the next day and you realize how dino our scheme is
