The State of Texas is the 'Mecca of amateur football'

I don't think many would argue that....

THAT would be tough to argue against due largely to the state of HS football there. There are high schools in Texas with better programs and facilities than some colleges.

I mean, the southeast is as a region, but if you are picking one state, its hard to argue against Texas.

ETA - wait, are we talking about the STATE of Texas or the university? Context please..

This is old news that's already been beat around talk radio and sports TV endlessly. When you hear what he was saying in context, it's not that bad. He was talking about his feelings when he was hired as a grad assistant at Texas from a non-name D-3 program years ago and he essentially said it felt like going from nothing to the mecca of college football.

Not it terms of results. It's actually hard to fathom how they have been so mediocre for so many seasons after DKR retired.

You and I have very different definitions of mediocre. Also, it has been stated in here, Mack Brown was allowed to stay for too long, and you had/still have too many millionaire and billionaire donors who all want a say in Texas athletics.

I thought he was talking about the university. Just considering the type of recruits in state and money they pour into that program...it's basically a coach's mecca.

I'm not saying the program is the Top program. But I'm assuming Mecca = Heaven, and considering the type of recruits in state and the amount of money Texas pours into their program, it's basically a coach's heaven, or mecca.

First, you got to believe something, then you got to speak it,then you have make it an actual fact. I believe that Tom Herman, will eventually make Texas relevant again. Besides, opinions are like a##holes right.Everybody's got one.

Wow. Alert the media. A college football coach is pumping his school for recruiting purposes. My God. Shocking!!!!

There is pumping up your school like they all do and then (if true) making a ridiculous comment. I'm guessing that 80% or more college fans couldn't even name Texas' home stadium even though it seats 100,000 people. That ain't the mecca.

UT is objectively a badass place to attend. The facilities, money, education, student atmosphere, town, and women are better than just about everyone else.

I think that we can all agree on UT being great for those qualities, but that has nothing to do with college football. I mean, since ‘003, LSU has won twice as many national championships as them, and almost everyone in the country recognizes us as having the best tailgating, best stadium atmosphere, and an objectively better team than UT over the past 10-20 years.

Now, I’m not walking around claiming LSU is or is not “the Meca of college football,” but I’d put us well ahead of UT. If I have to make a metaphor, though, I’m completely comfortable calling Death Valley the Shrine of College Football and the field is the Altar.

What do you expect a head coach to say about his program? It sucks? There’s enough history and money there to make this claim to recruits. They can choose to buy into that or not.
