Wow did not realize how high Jardin Gilbert was ranked in the portal.

LINK

The number 2 ranked safety behind only Caleb Downs. Excited to see him be a big part of the defensive turn around!

Portal rankings, in general, have been terrible. People have brought up the baseball portal stuff that doesn’t make sense a good bit. Players like Dutton being considered a top 50 transfer. Then basketball had a guy that averaged like 12 and 6 his 3rd year in college and he was ranked the top overall transfer.

Most of it seems to be more about who you played for vs a legitimate talent evaluation

High school players are evaluated for years and their rankings evolve over time, but when a player enters the portal they have a ranking in seconds with little thought.

A&M wasn’t sad to see him or Jacoby Matthew’s go

Some things that I noticed in regards to player portal rankings:

In some cases, there is sufficient game film over a period of years to be used in creating a portal ranking for a player. In general you see lower ranked players out of HS with increased rankings vis-a-vis their HS ranking as a portal transfer and conversely, higher ranked players out of HS (especially those who flame out for whatever reason) having lower rankings than their HS ranking as a transfer player.

In some cases. there is not sufficient game film to employ in creating a portal ranking, so the recruiting/ranking sites tend to default to their HS evaluation of transfer players. Ranking some way too high based upon actual production or lack thereof in college.

If NCAA 25 the video game is any indication he will be our best secondary player easily. He is a ballhawk in the games I’ve played with LSU

Lmao both starting safeties they didn’t care about huh. I guess they are just above us right? Also didn’t you say our national recruiting was terrible? What happened to that?

He was a bad tackler at A&M and had injury concerns. I’m sure the talent is there, just gotta hope he plays his best here

If he and Sage want to stay on the field, they better play well. Kylin Jackson and Deshawn Spears are coming.

It seems like Burns, Sage, and Penn will be starting game 1 but I really hope it's a short leash with these guys. If they play like they did last year, I'd much rather start moving on to the young players and just letting them work through the growing pains.

I understand, new coaches, new schemes. But these guys have been around for a while and received a lot of playing time. These 3 specifically were extra bad last year.

It’s funny you say that because what made me look up his ranking was Billy Lucci in an interview talking about how he hated to see Gilbert go and he would’ve been a lock to be a starter for Elko.

You basing that off one missed tackle? J Williams is going to do that to most safety in the league this year. Also the dude hadn’t played in 6 months at that point so give him a break.

I know you're getting downvoted to hell on this, but he did not have a great spring, according to someone close to the team. He was knocking off a lot of rust and learning a new defense. He has already proven he can play in the SEC. I don't think he'll be a force back there, but he'll be an upgrade from Burns and Sam.

I've recently watched all of the games from 23, and as bad as LSU's defense was, safety play was the worst unit.

It will be interesting to see how it sorts out in the secondary. We have like 18 scholarship guys so plenty of competition. It would seem hard to keep Toviano off the field - seems more a fit as a safety.

Penn had some nice games last year and Sage improved greatly. We won’t have anyone better than Penn when three backers are in game. Secondary was bad, but didn’t help that we had a defensive line that coudnt get a pass rush. Had some other DBs that couldn’t cover or tackle, and then we were throwing true freshmen in ther after injuries.. Throw in bad scheme and lack of quality position coaches. Lots of reasons to believe we will be better, even with the defensive tackle position being a big question.
