re: Would you trade success in baseball for success in basketball?

I'd do it without a second thought. Schools with national perceptions as all around dominating athletic programs like OSU, Texas, and Florida would pale in comparison to an LSU with 2 football national titles and 6 basketball national titles in a 20 year span.

NO WAY!! Baseball rules (next to football).

Yes, absolutely, without question.

can we have success in both?
Posted on 6/24/11 at 9:00 pm to slackster
Absolutely.
LSU has proven that it's much easier to biuild a baseball program than a basketball pogram.

I mean regardless of your opinion on the issue, basketball IS the higher profile sport and this is not remotely debatable by any means.

HELL NO. There is nothing like winning a championship in Omaha. Baseball at the Box is pretty tough to beat as well.

Also, even if LSU went out and won 6 titles in 20 years, we STILL wouldn't be the SEC "basketball school". It would still be Kentucky, and we'd be the new money interlopers. and as soon as we had any sort of slide, it would be considered the restoration of the natural order of things.
If we had 6 titles in 20 years we'd be pretty freaking well established. Just look at the rise of UCONN basketball, even before this year nobody thought they were sliding back and they only have 3 titles. Hell UK only has 7 titles so our 6 would go toe to toe with them and most likely be considered better since they're from the modern era.

oh GOD yes I'd trade that in a heartbeat. I'd trade it for even half that level of success.
I like baseball, it's... nice. But you have to remember it became popular when we were desperate to be good in just about anything at the time. Had baseball not been any good, we might all be stuttering on about how good our track team is/was, to fans of other schools who'd just say "ok" and shrug. And maybe we'd have made that a semi-respectable sport with constant sellouts, and other schools would follow suit, and it might occasionally make ESPN2 or something.
But March Madness would still trump track, the same as it does Omaha. Duke, UNC, UCLA, Kentucky, UConn etc- they all have followings rivalling pro teams in their sport. LSU baseball doesn't come anywhere near pro baseball, and we're as good as it gets.

I'd trade EVERY championship in baseball for ONE in basketball.

This is such a stupid thread.

I would trade all those titles in baseball for 1 national championship in men's or women's basketball. It's college baseball, outside of a couple of places nobody cares.

Not really. LSU experienced alot of success in the 90s, but a teams reputation is probably more related to what they've done in the past decade, and now being 2011, that equals 1 NC.
College baseball is far less prestigious than basketball and football because many of the nations top talent can simply go straight to the MLB which really kills college baseball. Futhermore, the MLB is going down in tv ratings as we speak, and really the mid to late 90's baseball was something for us to rally around.
Honestly, Id rather be dominant at FB and Basketball because thats what garners your school as elite. There are just too many schools in this country that don't give two flips about baseball and thus don't compete, not to mention the ones that do compete typically only get players that aren't ready for the majors or want a degree thus leaving the excitement of watching young superstars elsewhere.

This reminds me of the sign "LSU - College baseball's greatest fans" which really should say "LSU- College baseball's only fans." We are good at football now, and i don't see the point in getting so excited about a sport that so few people really care about.
Matt Mascona was talking about college baseball versus hockey the other day and it was quite rediculous. He's really gone down hill. Ever since he said how stupid people were for saying LSU didn't need Ridley just to see Ware show the entire country that he's the best back LSU has during the Cotton Bowl was laughable - but that's a different issue. Then he was talking about the big 10 competing in baseball, and really, why would you want to compete? LSU has some of the most intense college baseball fans there are, and students still go to the games for free. Think about it.
