It’s fantasy world to expect one of the highest paid coaching staffs and highest paid rosters in all of college baseball at one of the best programs in college baseball to make a playoff field of 64 teams?
Schloss (2018)
O'Connor (2017, 2018, 2025)
DVH (2016)
Bianco (2017, 2023, 2024)
Paul Mainieri (2025, 2026)
John Savage (2017, 2023, 2024)
Dan McDonnell (2021, 2023, 2024)
Gary Gilmore (2017, 2021)
The only top tier coaches it hasn't happened to is Kevin O'Sullivan (one away from it happening in 2024) and Tim Corbin. Sully and Corbin waste more talent than any coach in America. In 40 years in the SEC, they have a combined one more title than Jay has in his first 4 years at LSU.

I think 0-4, but I don't remember off hand. And I'm not looking it up right now.

One would think that as much as people crap on Mainieri's effort here post championship that they wouldn't talk up Sully so much as a title winner.

The “model of consistency” has won 57% of his conference games with 0 titles.
Yeah, give me Jay.

The people that think LSU is burning and want coaches like Jay fired are dumb and no one should pay any attention to them imo. I don’t think that’s the majority of the fanbase though, even though some on here want to act like it is. Then you have people like RB10 saying “I legit hope he leaves. You don’t deserve a good program.” just because a few posters said something dumb.
At the same time, I don’t fault any LSU fan for being pissed when a team is bad. I think that’s part of being a fan. When LSU plays good it brings me joy and happiness. When LSU plays bad, it makes me sad and angry.
This team just isn’t very good and it sucks. It’s not the first time and won’t be the last. Hopefully we get better and return to winning championships. It is what it is.

Why does it always circle back to questions like these?
I'm just wondering how a year like this year could happen, not even talking about a title or cws appearance/run. This is not even being competitive against the upper echelon in your league, which you're supposed to be part of

There's nothing wrong with saying "this season was unacceptable and we need to get it fixed."
What is wrong is adding the next sentence to that like this morons do on here. "This season was bad, we need to get it fixed, and otherwise Jay needs to be fired because he's not a good coach and only won because of Paul Skenes." That extra sentence drives me up a fricking wall.

Are schools scared of the 'what if' factor by letting him go?

So the Saints the last few years of Drew?
Except the lost opportunity was self inflicted instead of cheating zebras.

I root for both. LSU sports are more entertaining. But my kids will be going to Arkansas

depends on how someone defines consistent or how you define "today's baseball".
Since 2005, Oregon St has won 3 national titles. And they've only missed the NCAAT twice. They missed in in 2008 with a 28-24 (11-13) record and they missed it in 2016 with a 35-19 (16-14) record. They've been to Omaha 7 times in that span.
There's also Florida. They've only won one national title but under Sully they've never missed the NCAAT and they've been to Omaha 9 times.
Vandy is going to break their streak of 19 straight NCAAT appearances this year. hey've won 2 national titles and have been to Omaha 5 times.

So Jay Johnson is pretty much on par with the best of the best since Skip retired.
Which is exactly the point I’m trying to make. Everyone has duds, and that’s all this is for Jay.

I think there is a difference between a dud and what we did this year. 2024 was a dud at 13-17 and having to go on a late season run to get there. This was a little worse than just a dud. I' not even saying I have lost faith in Jay or think this means anything long-term for the program, but I can also understand the frustration of this season many have had. LSU hasn't been this bad at baseball since before Skip got here. I think Jay has earned some criticism and I think he would tell you that too.

No, these people live in a fantasy world where LSU should just replicate the 90s and win a title every other year.
No one thinks that.
People do, rightfully, expect to make the tournament each season. It is not a high bar.

Yeah I try to ignore those people as much as I can. I figure the majority of the time it’s trolls just trying to get comments back.

Making the tourney as a 2 seed and almost winning it isn’t a dud. That’s a down year.
Missing the tourney is a dud. And as you have pointed out, everyone does it except for Sully apparently, and to be fair, only one title with the talent UF has had would be disappointing.
ETA: Also, my point was programs that make the tourney every year AND “win one occasionally” are few and far between.
No one does that. Pat Casey retired and OSU has one CWS appearance in the last 7 years. Sully has 1. DVH has none.
Corbin is the only active coach with multiple titles who’s been consistent, but it’s been 7 years since the last title. Only 1 CWS visit since, and missing the tourney this season, as you’ve pointed out.
These same fans would want Corbin gone for not winning recently. They would want Sully for squandering talent and they would have wanted DVH run off about 5 years ago.
