What happens if Start Hurd and Hurd bombs out in first 2 innings. Who do we turn to with our shaky bullpen. Start Floyd and win game 1. Start Skenes in Game 2 and win. Then pitch Hurd in the 3rd.

I'd gamble even further and start Money. If he has trouble, you go to Hurd.

I would maybe even start Little but have the bullpen ready.

It's not a gamble, it's the only move.

Of course it’s a gamble. Every move is a gamble. The trick is to make the right moves that gives the resultant gamble the best odds. Hurd in game 1 is probably it. Coleman and Floyd would be the only other considerations for me.

Starting Skenes or even Floyd simply is not a gamble, it's a guarantee. You can win game 3 pitching Hurd against a team playing their 4th game. Especially if Hurd struggles (hoping he stays in current form) you will be facing weak pitching and we will score. Why take any risks the whole weekend, just throw your best and win.

And in game 3 which is way more important against a team that certainly has a much better lineup than Tulane

Do you even think thru your own questions? Are you guys just out thinking yourselves or are you looking for an excuse to bash Johnson later if things don’t work out? This is a strategy that has been in place for a long long time

I just hate this idea of gambling when losing is unacceptable and embarrassing in game 1. It has to be one of Hurd/Floyd/Skenes. No gamble, can't lose.

Do you understand how this tournament works? Losing game 1 gives you a much tougher road but you can and teams have come out if. If you lose game 3 from the winners bracket, you force a 4th deciding game, with all the pressure on you AND you’ve used all your top pitchers. If you are worried about “embarrassment” you should probably stop posting because your posts are way more embarrassing than losing to Tulane

I think that is a reasonable argument against using Skenes or even Floyd in Game 1, but that’s not really what this poster is saying. He’s saying they need to use one of their top 3 pitchers. I agree with that position. Their best path through regional is to go 3-0. The best way to do that is throwing Hurd, then Skenes, then Floyd. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to save Hurd for an “if necessary” 4th game. The only argument for using Coleman or someone else is if you think the best use for Hurd is to use him for 1-2 IP each game to finish out for Skenes and Floyd.

For game 1 it’s Coleman or Hurd people are arguing for Floyd which makes no sense. The goal is to win the regional not avoid “embarrassment” or lose a game to a 4.
