Would anyone like to have an intelligent conversation regarding our D?

If you are going to say fire Will Wade, our guys are all lazy, streetball, please do not post in here.

Our defense, it appears to me that we are running a switch everything man defense. This in theory should be a better defense than straight up man against the 3. However teams seems to be shooting ANY time they can even get the ball up against us from 3. Obviously switching somewhat leads to some amount of separation that gives them this opp. Or at least we are playing our switches VERY loose.

This seemingly really conservative approach is somewhat confusing especially since we tend to trap a whole lot on the short corner. Our aggressiveness seems out of place on D.

Thoughts- do we start trying a straight up man D? Play them extremely tight and risk giving up easy drives?

Also, i think we need to completely scrap the press. It only works when we throw it in a few times a game and it has burned us for 10-12 points a game several times

I think psychology plays a small part here. Teams are convinced they can hit 3s against LSU and do. I’m not saying LSU plays great defense, but there are times where teams just hit every shot (regardless of pressure, situation, or distance).

That’s a huge part. Which is why they’re throwing it up any chance they get.

Switching makes you lazy. Also that lazy mentally leads to offensive rebounds. You should only switch late in the shot clock.

I do not think this team can play straight up man. I know Javonte and Trendon cannot. I suspect Cam cannot. Darius is inconsistent.

I thought our defensive pressure late in this game was key to us winning.

We certainly have to improve.

It is frustrating allowing the 3s we do and IMO more frustrating when we play a team with a good big man who eats us alive in the paint.

We have to improve.

Drop the press for sure. Stop trapping in the half court and play man. Problem is, we have trouble stopping dribble drives. Gaines looked like a matador.

It is crazy how slow they are on rotations.

I’ve watched every single game since Wade has been here. Dribble penetration corner threes are this teams kryptonite.

I’m a huge Wade fan but it just seems like guys never know how to rotate no matter what type of defense we are playing.

Which is why I think maybe just straight up man is worth a shot at least. No thought process of “oh I gotta drop off”. Guard your guy and risk getting blown by.

We’ve got to try something different. Seeing the same thing over and over gets frustrating.

Completely agree. But that also makes me nervous because at times they have a severe effort problem at times on the defensive end.

Gotta try something though.

There was a noticeable difference in our defense when we went to the 3 guard lineup with Gaines. I love Mwani's effort and nothing against him at all, but our team matches up better with the extra speed on the perimeter and Gaines is a dribble threat on offense. A&M's hot shooting came to an end when Gaines came in and put better pressure on the ball.

IF, and this is a huge if, we can play heavy minutes with Smart, Cam, and Gaines together AND rebound well, I think that lineup can give us our best chance to go far. Days and Leblanc really need to sell out on cleaning up the defensive glass when they are in.

I think LeBlanc needs more minutes (if he can stay out of foul trouble). One of the few guys who is active on the glass.

No one wants to hear this but our 3 point defense isn’t that bad. The Alabama game was a disaster obviously. In the last 2 games (UK & A&M) opponents have shot 19/64. Before the Alabama game is was top 25 in the country. We give up too many offensive boards and don’t play very good transition defense. Not sure these things are fixable but the offense is elite and good enough to win any given night.

Looked like we went back and forth between switching everything and a more traditional look. Not sure if we did it just to play both ways or if we switched up depending on who was on the floor for both us and them. The bottom line is we’re much better playing man to man. Since the 2nd half at Kentucky we’ve gone almost exclusively man to man and we’ve had a 9% drop in FG% allowed, a 4% drop in 3pt FG% allowed, we’ve given up fewer FTs, scored more points in transition, scored more points off turnovers and rebounded better. But most importantly we’ve given up what would amount to more than 8 fewer ppg.

Low blow alert! The only guy that couldn't hit 3's against us is...well...Cam Thomas.

It’s very easy. It you are going to switch on defense you should switch to deny. We do not.
