Nikki Caldwell's base salary at UCLA is 1.4 Million. Is our AD really ready to spend that much money on a coach?

That's her entire salary. She makes less than 300K per season. She's my choice for the job.

The three sports that make a profit at the University are football, baseball and men's basketball, with football making up the majority of the profit.

I'd venture to say that the only program on LSU's campus that "turns a profit" is football.

this past season we averaged 3289 attendance per game

so is paying all that money for a coach worth the extra 2,000 butts in the seats per game?

Nell Fortner at Auburn: $570,000
Dawn Staley at Carolina: $650,000
Matthew Mitchell's Kentucky: $600,000

Gonna cost some money.

You are right.... the 1.4 million was her 5 year base salary. Her annual package is more in the $600,000 thousand mark with the incentives.

Actually Nikki wouldn't be a bad choice...............and she's the most beautiful head coach in college sports. But with what she's building on the west coast, in a talent hotbed at that, I can't see her coming here.

Kentucky made a bad decision in getting Mitchell?

Yep.
The more butts in the seats, the less money the department "loses". This is why its in their best interest to get the absolute best coach they can.

Butts in the seats is not the only measure of value from a successful program. Our football program brings in much more revenue than ticket prices x 92,500 x # of home games, and has value beyond even the revenue it brings in. I don't believe there's a ledger entry for exposure and image (though I guess "goodwill" might approximate it). Having a successful womens basketball team adds value through increased attendance, but would also add value in less tangible ways that are still (imo) important. I really like the image LSU has (or has had) of excelling or trying to excel at pretty much everything (football, baseball, basketball (once upon a time), womens basketball (recently), track & field, softball, volleyball, soccer, etc.). I'm a fan of LSU sports and believe there is value in success at any sport in which we compete. The athletic department has the money, and I believe another successful athletic program at LSU is worth more than a couple of more TAF banquets or another new set of dumbbells for the auxillary practice facility weightroom. No need to go crazy with it, but no need to cheapskate it either.

Coach Barmore was somewhat forced out at Tech for some reason and then retired. He missed coaching so Mulky was able to convince him to be an assistant with her at Baylor. Maybe he'd be interested in another head gig in Louisiana.

Nobody forced Barmore out at Tech. He just retired and it was assumed that Mulkey would take over but Dan Reneau (Tech pres.) couldn't get a deal worked out with her and she left for Baylor and Barmore stayed on for another two years

you dont seem to understand

it doesnt mstter how good the program is, you will only average about 5300 fans per game. it doesnt matter how much you pay the coach. the team is bad and you still bring in 3300 fans per game

now let us run some numbers. a great program will bring in about 28,000 extra fans in a season (14 home games * 2,000 fans)

lets also say that the average ticket to a women's game is $10.

this means that a GREAT WOMEN'S PROGRAM brings in an additional roughly $350,000 of revenue.

in the best days, we can assume that WBB was making about $800,000 (5500 fans per game * $10 a ticket * $1,000 in concessions per game) in revenue per season. in those days, i'm ok with paying a coach $500,000 and using the rest for assistants, travel, etc and even taking a minor loss.

Actually I FULLY understand. King Joey says it best in his above post............................

It really doesn't matter what YOU are okay with. This is about what LSU is okay with. LSU is willing to spend market value for a good coach. What's the problem with that?

Yall can do what Louisiana Tech did and just get one of LSU's old players do be the coach. Weatherspoon is bringing Tech back to where they should be. If yall aren't interested in that maybe someone like Gary Blair from Texas A&M?

Blair is paid like $800,000.

Not sure if LSU would try to match that, but who knows?

+1
It all sells the brand excellence of LSU. I want LSU to be #1 in Golf, Track, Tennis and Tiddlywinks.
I'm also more of the "if you build it , they'll come" mindset. I'm pretty sure you can break even at 5,500/event.

If the Tigers were to hire Barmore, it's like dejavu all over again. Another 60 + head coach who will only be here a few years & then retire. Need to rethink this.
