There is ZERO chance we get either Alabama or Auburn as a perm opponent. Bama will definitely have Tennessee and Auburn and is not gonna let the SEC give them LSU as well. Auburn is gonna have Bama and UGA and should get Vandy as their third one, IMO.

The good thing is we play everyone at least twice in a 4-year period.

They are going to divide the conference into tiers to determine permanent opponents.

I am trying to ascertain who the top tier teams are.

1. Georgia
2. Alabama
3. LSU.
4. Oklahoma
5. Florida
6. Auburn
7. Tennessee
8. Texas

Best guess on recent relevancy

I wonder if they would periodically "re-tier"

Depends, if we start winning regularly I wouldn’t count on it

There were earlier threads on this on SECr based on 'leaked' info. The list of top 8 was exactly as you have them, except A&M was on the list and Tennessee was not.

The idea being floated for the 3-and-6 setup is that each "top 8" team would have 2 other top 8s, plus a bottom 8, as their permanents. And the reverse for the bottom 8s.

Clam, who do you think LSU gets if the list looks like this instead of A&M as a “top 8” team? (What were we thinking?).

I could see LSU getting Florida, A&M and Ole Miss but I haven’t done all the matchups…

Rivalry week matters, too. Everyone must have an opponent for that game.

I think that’s how you have to rank it currently. Maybe you re-evaluate every 4 years and set the schedules for the next 4 years thereafter, so everyone goes through a complete home and away series with all rotating opponents.

I did a quick, scratch paper calculation and came up with the following, based on that list of 8 top tier programs.

LSU-Alabama will not be a yearly series.

LSU: UF, OU, Ole Miss
Bama: Auburn, Tenn, Miss St
Auburn: Bama, Georgia, Mizz
Georgia: Auburn, UF, USC
UF: UGA, LSU, UK
OU: LSU, Texas, Ark
Tenn: Bama, Texas, Vandy
Texas: Tenn, OU, A&M

Arky: Mizz, USC, OU
UK: Vandy, Miss, UF
Miss St: Miss, A&M, Bama
Ole Miss: Miss St, UK, LSU
Mizz: Arky, Vandy, Auburn
USC: A&M, Arky, UGA
A&M: SC, Miss St., Texas
Vandy: UK, Mizz, Tenn

Part of the consideration is rivalry week.

Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and South Carolina play ACC teams.

The remaining matchups are
Iron Bowl
Egg Bowl
Arky-Mizz
Texas-A&M
Tenn-Vandy

Which leaves:
LSU vs Oklahoma. Our new rivals.

There's no fair way to divide the SEC into top and bottom tiers, half and half. Where do you put Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Auburn, and Florida?

We should have NO PERMS at all and just rotate every year. That's the only fair way to do it.

No, I believe the projected pod for LSU will be LSU, aTm, Ole Miss, Miss State.

Then you’ll have:

Okla, Texas, Arky, Mizzou
Bama, Auburn, Tennessee, Vandy
Georgia, Fla, SoCa, Kentucky

LSU would probably have Florida, Alabama, and Auburn. LSU-Alabama is the South’s Ohio State Michigan for this generation, there is no way it’s not an annual lock. Florida-LSU have a deep history and carried the 00’s as the top matchup for the SEC. Auburn/Ole Miss being the third. A&M isn’t replacing any of the aforementioned should they do a shift of the conference matchups

That's my dream scenario. Offsets any gripes about Auburn playing Bama and UGA and us, as well as Bama having Tenn, Auburn and us. We'd be having three Big 6 schools on the permanent rotation as well.

I don't know if it's mathematically feasible but I'd love for the existing Big 6 to have each other as permanents to maintain the matchups that's carried the conference over the years

Bama: Auburn, Tenn, LSU
Auburn: Bama, UGA, LSU
LSU: Bama, Auburn, Florida
Florida: UGA, Tenn, LSU
UGA: Auburn, Florida, Tenn
Tenn: Bama, Florida, UGA

Let the rest of the newcomers and bottom feeders sort their permanents out amongst themselves

I guess my first question is how will the conference be aligned? If east and west remain, this is what it should be:

East

South Carolina
Georgia
Tennessee
Vandy
Florida
Alabama
Auburn
Kentucky

West

LSU
Ole Miss
Miss State
Arkansas
Mizzou
TAMU
Oklahoma
Texas

If it's 4 pods:

1 - Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas
2 - Texas A&M, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State
3 - Alabama, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Tennessee
4 - Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky

It'll be interesting to see what Sankey does.

If there are 3 permanent opponents, we know Bama will for sure get Auburn and Tennessee. It would suck for them to get 3 Big Six members as permanents

This is why it probably won’t be annual anymore.

What if for purposes of scheduling when the SEC goes to 16 teams, instead of divisions (which I don't think will fly) or pods or whatever, they do like FIFA does and rank teams every two years or every four years based on records and put them in pots by order of finish - Pot A being the top 4 teams over that period, Pot B teams 5-8 and so on.

Then you construct pods by drawing names out of each pot so each Pod has the a team from A, a team from B, A team from C and a team from D.

there are more logistics that would need to be worked out as far as which teams would play out of the pods, but kinda set up each season like a tournament.

Is that completely crazy?

Miss State, Ole Miss, Florida
