Short side option is his favorite play...

Ok. Someone post actual stats on this play? It gets hate because it rarely gains more than 2 yards. I'm willing to bet it averages 2-3 yards a play. I would love to see actual stats on the play, if possible.
The back that seemed to benefit the most from it to me was Blue but he got hurt early. Blue is a very patient runner, so it seems to work best for him.

Its so turrible other teams have started running it.

its the power play with a quick toss. pretty much everybody in the country runs the power play. the playside offensive line blocks down, the fullback kicks out the end man on the line of scrimmage, and the backside guard wrap pulls for the playside linebacker. teams stop it by having the end squeeze down the line and wrong shoulder cut the fullback. this creates a pile which prevents the guard from getting to the playside LB. He is clean to make the play. LSU started tossing it to put doubt in the mind of the defensive end as to whether it was the power or an outside run thus giving the fullback time to kick him out. This year it was less effective because the DE was simply keying the offensive linemen in front of him. when he blocked down the DE squeezed down - no questions asked. LSU runs few outside runs as compared to power and inside zone out of its 2 back sets thus making it less dangerous for opponents to sell out on the power pitch. When LSU did toss it on an outside run from a 2 back look it pretty much always popped big.
I wouldn't know the stats for the run this year but hopefully that answers the question of why it was less successful this year as opposed to 2 or 3 years ago.

The quarterback is able to turn around and pick up the DE (the tackle/TE almost always gives him at least a bump first to throw him off balance). But this allows the end man, who would have had to focus on the DE, to just bump him and move on to block the backside OLB (who can often be unblocked in a typical off-guard run).
Essentially, it gives an extra blocker on the second level. Rarely do we see it busted for a huge gain like we did verse SC because there are so many bodies in the box. But we have an extra lineman on the second level making a positive gain a near certainty, which is why this is such an effective short yardage play.
The place we have had trouble here is not in the play itself. It is in the frequency with which we run it. We've just become too predictable with this play, which has limited its overall success. But with better selectivity, this really is a terrifically designed play.

It is a great play.
it's a good short yardage play

Maybe we will see it run to the outside more.
then it's not a toss dive anymore, it's more of a toss sweep. which we actually did run more this yr than in the past.

well it went for 50 yards against USC, so it would take 24 more runs of 0 yards to bring it to 2 ypc

yea...i hated it when Hill busted it for a 50+ yard TD

first, it was the bubble screen. Then, the short side option. Now, the toss dive? We're gonna run out of plays soon...

Not so. LSU coaches it so the QB's hands stay low. LBs and DBs usually can't see the pitch.
You are clueless if you do not think the defense cannot see the pitch.
The play is fine for slower defenses, but it takes too long to develop against top defenses that can go downhill from the second the QB releases the toss.

I really don't mind the pitch dive, but we damn sure need to scrap any option plays with Mett...absolute waste of a down and any time spent practicing it, is just flat out stupid.

The reason why nearly EVERY LSU football fan bitches about it is because nobody remembers it ever working.
Same issue with the short side option.

It's actually more of a ploy to freeze D on the possibility of toss sweep. If the QB and booth see it isn't being honored, you should then see the sweep for big gains.
There should also be a toss sell and pass from same formation, but haven't noticed it. All have to sell, pulling a guard, etc.
There have been some pretty fleaflickers thrown off the toss also.

Y'all aren't saying this shot when we score off it.

It also gives the back more time to read his blocks and see his cut backs due to the zone blocking scheme.
